Barangay St. Christine in Lianga is grappling with a significant surge in teenage pregnancies, a challenge further
exacerbated by the ongoing Covid pandemic and the influence of modern technology. The presence of the 75th IB
and 9SF near the barangay hall has introduced a unique dynamic, with military personnel and members of CAFGU
often opting to marry in the area. Notably, young females in this community frequently marry as early as fourteen
years old.
The distinctive character of Barangay St. Christine, highlighted by its renowned beach resort, Coastway, attracts
visitors from diverse locations. Indigenous Peoples (IP) youths from Purok 5 - Sitio Huwangan are particularly
affected, experiencing early marriages due to economic hardships. In some instances, parents reluctantly consent to
these marriages due to challenging circumstances, as revealed in interviews with Barangay Health Workers (BHW)
and visiting nurses.
In response to the pressing challenges, the women's association is taking proactive steps to instigate meaningful
change. Recognizing the escalating concerns related to teenage pregnancy, the association is gearing up to lead
advocacy awareness campaigns within local schools. These campaigns aim not only to illuminate the potential
consequences of teenage pregnancy but also to engage students in informative workshops and discussions
facilitated by qualified speakers and educators.
Simultaneously, the women's association is directing efforts to address the root causes by launching a concerted
campaign to promote responsible parenting among parents in the community. Through awareness campaigns,
collaboration with local authorities, and engagement with healthcare professionals, the association seeks to
empower parents with the knowledge and tools necessary for effective parenting in today's evolving landscape.
To amplify the impact of these initiatives, the women's association is strategically partnering with local institutions,
including schools, government agencies, and NGOs. The use of various media channels, such as social media and IEC
materials, will be installed and employed to disseminate crucial information and reach a broader audience.
Through these comprehensive initiatives, the women's association aspires to create a more informed and supportive
community. By equipping both teenagers and parents with the necessary knowledge and resources, the association
aims to foster positive choices that contribute to the overall well-being and resilience of Barangay St. Christine.
