SKETCHES ARE NOT DONE TO SCALE

Question 1

1.1 Two tug boats pull a ship into harbour as shown. Which of the options A, B C or D give the most
approximate direction for the resultant motion.

1.2 A man is hanging from a cliff with one hand holding an ice-pick.
The force/s keeping the man in equilibrium are
A Gravity
B Tension in the arm holding on
C Gravity and the tension in the arm
D none of the above
1.3. The static friction coefficient is a measure of the…

A weight of an object

B the Normal force of an object

C the ratio of the Normal force to the weight of the object

D force pushing on a surface [3x2 =6]

Question 2

A groundsman is pushing a mower with a mass of 50kg over a lawn with a force of 100N. The handle
of the mower is at 450 to the horizontal. He is moving with a uniform velocity of 2m.s-1 to the right.

2.1 Using a labelled free body diagram, show ALL the forces acting on the mower. (4)

2.2 Calculate the horizontal component of the pushing force. (2)

2.3 Calculate the weight of the mower? (2)

2.4 Calculate the total force the mower exerts on the ground. (3)
Question 3

Refer to the sketch which is shown. The angle of the stay wire is 520 to the horizontal and the mass
of the block is 20kg.

3.1 Using the information given draw a FORCE DIAGRAM to show all the forces shown in the
diagram. Label any given information on your diagram. (this does not need to be to scale) (4)

3.2 Calculate the magnitude of the force T1 in the stay- wire. (3)

Question 4

A skier of mass 80kg skis down a slope of 250. He is moving at a uniform velocity of 10m.s-1.

4.1 Determine the perpendicular component of the gravitational force acting on him. (3)

4.2 Determine force acting parallel to the slope. (3)

4.3 Hence calculate the kinetic frictional coefficient of the snow and the skis. (2)
