CHAPTER 3
Page Questions
56 1-3

4. Solve these simultaneous equations:

√𝑥 + √𝑦 = 5
√𝑥𝑦 = 6

5. Solve these simultaneous equations:

3 10 5
+ =2
𝑥 𝑦

3𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 38

Challenging Questions
1. It is given that 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 𝑘 and (6𝑥 − 20)2 + (4𝑦 + 3)2 = 169.
(a) If 𝑘 = 8, find the solutions to the simultaneous equations.
(b) If 𝑘 = −10, without solving the equations, determine the number of real solutions for the
simultaneous equations.
(c) Explain why there cannot be more than two real solutions for all values of 𝑘.

2. The line 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 − 1 and the curve 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 − 5 intersect at the points 𝐴(4, −5) and 𝐵.
Find the coordinates of 𝐵.

3. Find the values of the constant 𝑐 for which the line 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 𝑐 is a tangent to the curve
4
𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 𝑥.
