INTRODUCTION
Everyone has been hearing about globalization. It has become a
household byword. But does everyone ever know what it means
exactly? For sure, it has economic implications judging from the
ease of travel and communications brought about by our rapidly
advancing technology- making the world seem much smaller than it really is.
Physical barriers that used to separate countries apart have now been crossed
over and conquered. Walls have been crushed down and obliterated.

Now people can see one another very clearly and interact much more
intimately than ever before. The concept of globalization encompasses not just
the economic aspect but also the cultural dimension that comes with close
connectivity and intimacy. This will become apparent as we go on our lesson.

The 21st century world has made globalization mark powerfully the
borderlessness. Globalization has provided easy access to information.

In this part, it is expected that you will learn about globalization,
its effects and the importance of collaboration and cooperation
using the text, images, chart and activities so you will learn and understand
more the lesson. You may also search and study additional information about
the lesson from other resources.

LET’S START!

What is globalization?

Have you ever heard the term ‘globalization’ before? Let us start
venturing the concept of globalization in a simplest way. In one of the episodes
of the National Geographic Channel entitled “Effects of Economic
Globalization”, it considered globalization as “the connection of different parts
of the world...it is the term used to describe the increasing connectedness and
interdependence of world’s cultures and economies.” Through this process,
nation-states become open to ideas, technologies, way of life, and a
commonality of standard particularly with respect to goods and services.

Ever wondered why people rarely give archaic names like Pedro, Maria,
Jose for they are now called Peter, Mary and Joe? Ever wondered why you can
no longer hear kundiman songs being played over the radio? Do you ever
notice how we seem to speak the same language and appreciate the same
musical genre like Kpop songs? Serenading or panghaharana is already a thing
of the past superceded by text messages or chats. These, and almost
everything around us, even the mobile phone you are holding right now, is an
undeniable product of globalization.

Nations and states get to share and absorb the ways of life of others.
Technological advances, political ideologies as well as culture from first world
countries are shared and transferred to third world countries. It is like nations
and states are being able to dance in the same music. We are able to transcend
political, social and cultural boundaries.

Effects of Globalization

1. Economic Globalization

This refers to the increasing interdependence of world economies as a

result of the growing scale of cross-border trade of commodities and services,
flow of international capital and wide and rapid spread of technologies.
Example: We get to use android phones and other gadgets which were
manufactured in foreign countries.
2. Political Globalization

3
Refers to the emergence of national and international nongovernmental
organizations that act as watchdogs over governments and have increased
their activities and influence.

Example: International Criminal Court (ICC) serves as a watchdog for

justice in the world.

3. Cultural Globalization

Refers to the transmission of ideas, meanings and values around the

world in such a way as to extend and intensify social relations.
Example: We get to enjoy Kpop songs, fashion and food.

The Importance of Collaboration and Cooperation

By this time, we are already aware of the role of globalizaion and its
direct effects in our daily life. So what do you think would happen if nations
would decide things independently and would disregard the welfare of other
nations? Would there be peace, progress and development? What do you
think?

The saying, “in unity there is strength” applies to this part of our lesson.
During the peak of the corona virus outbreak, countries, be first or third world,
were brought to their knees. The global economy flanked as lockdowns were
imposed, hundreds of thousands of lives were taken. The world became so
desperate to come up with a vaccine that only first world countries can afford
to produce. This is the time when pharmaceutical companies, scientists,
chemists and other professionals specializing in microbiology, collaborated to
finally be able to produce vaccines. Without such cooperation between and
among nations, the world would still have been left in the brink or collapse by
now. Nations would find it hard to get back on their knees after this pandemic
without the help of others. Cooperation is indeed a necessary element of a
nations’development.

Read further to further emphasize the importance of cooperation and

collaboration.

Benefits of Collaboration and Cooperation in Globalization

1. It creates a global village through an exchange of ideas and information

through the social network and wireless web.

2. It fosters local, regional, and national growth in the economy by being able
to acces low-cost goods from other countries, provide employment, and
international collaboration of scientific and techology development.

3. Allows people to understand and adapt cultures, values, and beliefs of

different countries.

4
4. It motivates world leaders to create policies to protect the welfare of the
people, the commnunity, as well as the environment.

5. It speaks of modernity and all traditional methods of transactions are

considered obsolete.
