Two trees on level ground, 12 meters apart, are joined by a cable. It is attached 11 meters
above the ground to one tree and 2 meters above the ground to the other. What is the
length of the cable between the two trees, correct to the nearest meter?
6)

7) The angle of elevation of the top of an incomplete vertical pillar at a horizontal

distance of 100 meters from its base is 45 degrees.
If the angle of elevation of the top of the complete pillar from the same spot is to be
60 degrees, then by how much the height of the incomplete pillar should be
increased?
8) A private plane flies for 1.3 hours at 110 mph on a bearing of 40°.
Then it turns and continues another 1.5 hours at the same speed, but on a bearing
of 130°. At the end of this time, how far is the plane from its starting point?

b) Find the equation of the following quadratic graph.

22) A walker leaves his house at 10 00 and walks towards a shopping centre at a constant
speed of 5 km/h. A cyclist leaves the same house 10 minutes later. He travels along the same road
at a constant speed of 20 km/h until he reaches the shopping centre which is 6 km from the house.
The cyclist stops at the shopping centre for 14 minutes. He then returns to the house along the
same road at a constant speed of 20 km/h.

(a) The distance-time graph for the walker is drawn below. On the same axes, draw the distance-
time graph for the cyclist.

(b) Using the graphs, find

(i) the time when the cyclist, on his return journey, meets the walker,

(ii) the distance from the house when this meeting takes place.
23) The diagram is the speed–time graph of part of a train’s journey.

The train slows down uniformly from a speed of 44 m/s to a speed of 20 m/s in a time of 10 seconds.
It then continues at a constant speed of 20 m/s.

(a) Find the deceleration when t = 5.

(b) Find the speed when t = 5.

(c) The distance travelled from t = 0 to t = 10 is equal to the distance travelled from
t = 10 to t = 10 + k. Find k.
