Learning Activity Sheet #3 – Acid, Base and Salt

Name: _______________________________________ Date: ____________________
Section: ______________________________________ Score: ___________________

Objective: Classify compounds into acid, base & salt based on their properties.

ACIDS:
➢ A sour taste is a characteristic property of all acids in aqueous solution.
➢ Acids react with some metals to produce hydrogen gas.
➢ Because aqueous acid solutions conduct electricity, they are identified as electrolytes.
➢ Acids react with bases to produce a salt and water.
➢ Acids turn indicators different colors.
BASES:
➢ Bases tend to taste bitter and feel soapy.
➢ Like acids, aqueous basic solutions conduct electricity, and are identified as electrolytes.
➢ Bases react with acids to produce a salt and water.
➢ Bases turn indicators different colors.
SALTS:
➢ Salt is a neutral substance whose aqueous solution does not affect litmus.
➢ Most of the salts are soluble in water.
➢ Solution of salts in water act as good conductor of electricity.
➢ Some salts are white crystal whereas some are colored. For example, copper sulphate is blue in
color and ferrous sulphate is green.

I. Direction: Study the table below showing the results of an experiment and answer the
following question.
Sample Red Litmus Paper Blue Litmus Paper
Tap water No change in color No change in color
Distilled water No change in color No change in color
Calamansi juice Stays red Turns red
Vinegar Stays red Turns red
Liquid detergent Turns blue Stays blue
Baking soda Turns blue Stays blue
Saltwater Turns blue No change in color
Questions:
1. How would you describe each substance as to their reaction with litmus paper?
