Dear Mr/Ms: ________________________
At this time in the school year, it becomes necessary to notify parents/guardians of the
implications of their child’s school performance. This letter is to inform you that your child,
__________________________________ academic performance thus far has been
unsatisfactory. Continued poor performance may result in repeating this grade level next year. It
is essential that you become actively involved in working with us to assist in the development of
a plan, that will hopefully bring about academic success.
The poor performance areas are indicated below:
• Solve a system of linear inequalities by graphing.
• Application of systems of linear equations.
• Determine whether an ordered pair is a solution of a system of linear inequalities.
• Solve a system of linear equations by graphing
• Solve a system of equations by elimination

Your child is required to answer the learning material that were given to them, as they are
incomplete with some of the requirements in STM II. The attached worksheet will be given on
February 7, 2024.
The worksheet must be signed to ensure that the parents/guardians are well – informed with the
performance of their child in STM II.
If you have any questions, please email us. florisa.cello@deped.gov.ph

✓ Determine whether an ordered pair

is a solution of a system of
Readiness Quiz! equations.
✓ Solve a system of linear equations
Before you proceed, take this readiness quiz. by graphing Solve a system of
equations by substitution.
1. Find the slope and the y – intercept of the line; 3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 12. ✓ Solve a system of equations by

Determining whether an Ordered Pair is a Solution of a System of equations.
Equations

Definition:
System of Linear Equation
When two or more linear equations are grouped together, they form a system of linear equations. We will use a left
brace “{“ in writing a system of equation.

𝟐𝒙 + 𝟑𝒚 = 𝟓
{ Read as “the system of equations 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 5 and 𝑥 − 𝑦 = 1”
𝒙−𝒚 = 𝟏

The solutions of a system of equations are the values of the variables that make all the equations true. A solution of
a system of two linear equations is represented by an ordered pair (x, y).

Example 1 Determine whether (−3, 1) is a solution of each system of equation.

2𝑥 + 5𝑦 = −1 5𝑦 = 2 − 𝑥
a. { b. {
𝑥 − 𝑦 = −4 𝑦 = 3𝑥
Solution:
To determine if (−3,1) is a solution of each system, you must substitute the value of x and y in the given system.
The value of x is – 3 and y is 1.
2𝑥 + 5𝑦 = −1 First equation: 2𝑥 + 5𝑦 = −1 Second equation: 𝑥 − 𝑦 = −4
a. {
𝑥 − 𝑦 = −4
2(−3) + 5(1) = −1 (−3) − (1) = −4

−6 + 5 = −1 −𝟒 = −𝟒
−𝟏 = −𝟏
Since (−3,1) satisfies both equations, then it is a solution of the system.
5𝑦 = 2 − 𝑥
b. { First equation: 5𝑦 = 2 − 𝑥 Second equation: 𝑦 = 3𝑥
𝑦 = 3𝑥
5(1) = 2 − (−3) (1) = 3(−3)

5=2+3 𝟏 = −𝟗
(−3,1) satisfy in the first equations, but in the second equation it does not
𝟓=𝟓 satisfy, then it is not a solution of the system.

𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 10
1. Determine whether (6, −2) is a solution of the system; { .
𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 20
3𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 18
2. Determine whether (4, −3) is a solution of the system; {
4𝑦 = 3𝑥

Solve systems of linear equations by Graphing.

When we solve a system of two linear equations represented by a graph of two lines in the same plane,
there are three possible cases, as shown.

Example 2 Solve the system by graphing; {

𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 4
2𝑥 − 𝑦 = 3

HOW TO SOLVE A SYSTEM OF LINEAR

EQUATIONS BY GRAPHING.
✓ Graph the first equation. Graph the
second equation on the same
rectangular coordinate system.
✓ Determine whether the lines
intersect, are parallel, or are the same
line.
✓ Identify the solution to the system.
◦ If the lines intersect, identify the
point of intersection. This is the
solution to the system.
◦ If the lines are parallel, the system
has no solution.
◦ If the lines are the same, the system
has an infinite number of solutions.
✓ Check the solution in both equations.

3𝑥 + 𝑦 = −1
1. Solve the system by Graphing; { .
2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 0
1
𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 3
2. Solve the system by Graphing; {
𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 4

Let’s sum this up by looking at the graphs of the three types of systems.

Solve systems of linear equations by Substitution

Example 3 Solve the system by substitution; {

2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 7
𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 6

HOW TO SOLVE A SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS BY

SUBSTITUTION.
✓ Solve one of the equations for either
variable.
✓ Substitute the expression from Step 1
into the other equation.
✓ Solve the resulting equation.
✓ Substitute the solution in Step 3 into
either of the original equations to find
the other variable.
✓ Write the solution as an ordered pair.
✓ Check that the ordered pair is a
solution to both original equations.

Solve systems of linear equations by Elimination

The Elimination Method is based on the Addition Property of Equality. The Addition Property of Equality says
that when you add the same quantity to both sides of an equation, you still have equality. We will extend the
Addition Property of Equality to say that when you add equal quantities to both sides of an equation, the
results are equal.

Example 4 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 7
Solve the system by elimination; {
𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 6

HOW TO SOLVE A SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS

BY ELIMINATION.
✓ Write both equations in standard
form. If any coefficients are
fractions, clear them.
✓ Make the coefficients of one
variable opposites.
◦ Decide which variable you will
eliminate.
◦ Multiply one or both equations
so that the coefficients of that
variable are opposites.
✓ Add the equations resulting from
Step 2 to eliminate one variable.
✓ Solve for the remaining variable.
✓ Substitute the solution from Step
4 into one of the original
equations. Then solve for the
other variable.
✓ Write the solution as an ordered
pair.
✓ Check that the ordered pair is a
solution to both original
equations.
