Mount Kanlaon
Mount Kanlaon, the highest peak in the Visayas region of the Philippines, is a
majestic volcano with a unique blend of natural attractions and geological wonders. The
active volcanic crater dominates the landscape, with a crater lake occasionally revealing a
captivating crater lake. The surrounding area is adorned with lush rainforests, home to a
variety of flora and fauna, essential for maintaining ecological balance. Mount Kanlaon
offers picturesque views, particularly during clear weather, and offers an unforgettable
trekking experience, requiring physical endurance and a sense of adventure.
To reach Mount Kanlaon in Negros Occidental from Tago, take a bus or van to
Butuan City, then a flight to Bacolod City. From there, take a bus or van to Murcia Town,
which is 40 kilometers away and takes 1.5 hours. From there, hire a local guide or arrange
transportation to the mountain's base, which is 20 kilometers away and takes 30 minutes to
1 hour.
Things to prepare
To ensure a safe and enjoyable hike to Mount Kanlaon, prepare the following items and
wear appropriate attire:
Hiking essentials: Bring a backpack with essentials like a map, compass, flashlight,
first-aid kit, multi-tool, whistle, extra batteries, and a lighter or matches.
Sufficient water and food: Pack enough water (at least 2 liters) and high-energy
snacks or meals to keep you hydrated and nourished during the hike.
Proper clothing: Wear moisture-wicking, quick-drying clothing layers to adapt to
changing weather conditions. A moisture-wicking base layer, a mid-layer for
insulation, and a waterproof and wind-resistant shell are recommended.
Protective gear: Wear a hat or cap to protect your face and neck from the sun, and
a pair of sunglasses with UV protection. Bring gloves and a buff or scarf to protect
your hands and neck from cold temperatures.
Sturdy footwear: Wear hiking boots or shoes with good ankle support and a sturdy
sole for better grip on the mountain trails.
Trekking poles: Consider using trekking poles for added stability, especially on steep
and uneven terrain.
Sleeping bag and tent (for overnight stays): If you plan to camp overnight at the
summit or nearby, bring a lightweight, warm sleeping bag and a tent suitable for the
weather conditions.
Camera (optional): If you want to capture your adventure, bring a camera or a
smartphone with a sturdy case to protect it from the elements.
Proper attire: Wear comfortable, moisture-wicking hiking pants or leggings, and
consider bringing a pair of extra socks.
Sunscreen and insect repellent: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and an insect
repellent containing DEET to protect yourself from sunburn and insect bites.
Leave No Trace principles: Practice responsible hiking by carrying out all your trash
and respecting the environment and wildlife.

for a safe and enjoyable experience. To ensure a safe hike, pack appropriate clothing, rain
