Purpose
Synology Drive Client allows you to create scheduled backup tasks to back up
files on your computer to a Synology Drive server, as well as create versions of
these files that can be restored or downloaded when needed. This article shows
you how to set up a backup task and how to restore previous versions of files
using Synology Drive Client.
Resolution
Download and install the desktop client
1. Go to Download Center.
2. Click the Select product type drop-down menu and select NAS.
3. Click the Select your Synology Product drop-down menu and select your
Synology NAS model.
4. Go to the OS Version field and select your DSM version.
5. Go to the Desktop Utilities tab, find Synology Drive Client, and click
Download.
6. Select the version for your computer's operating system and click Download.
Start your backup task
1. Run the Synology Drive Client on your computer. Click Start Now.
2. Connect to your Synology NAS running Synology Drive Server using either its
domain name, QuickConnect ID, or IP address (IPv6 supported). You can also
click Search ( ) to search all Synology NAS on your local area network.1
3. Enter the username and password. Click Next.

4. Select Backup Task. Click Next.

5. Select your backup source and destination. You can change the destination by
clicking Select.

6. Click Backup Rules to configure further settings.


7. Tick Keep locally deleted files on the remote backup destination folder so
that the files already backed up to your Synology NAS will not be deleted even
if you delete them on your computer. Click Apply to save the changes.

8. Click Next.
9. Choose one of the three backup modes. We highly recommended
selecting Continuous backup because it helps avoid data loss. However, in this
example, we will demonstrate how to configure a Scheduled backup because
it requires more steps. Click Next.

10. Select backup days, frequency, start time, and end time from each menu.

11. Tick Continue any uncompleted backup tasks when the system is in
operation again so that the backup task will continue to run after recovering
from interruptions such as an unexpected system shutdown.
12. Click Next.

13. You will see a summary of your backup task in the last step of the wizard.
Click Done to confirm.
14. Double click on the Synology Drive Client icon in the notification area to view
your backup information and progress.
Download or restore a previous version of synced files from Synology
Drive server
1. Open Synology Drive Client, go to Backup Task, and click Restore.

2. Select the file you want to restore. You can choose a particular version of the
file by selecting a specific date and time from the Time menu on top.
Click Restore.2

3. You can also download files to a specific destination by selecting a file and
clicking Download.

Notes:
1. For Synology Drive Client to properly connect to Synology Drive Server,
make sure port 6690 of your Synology NAS is opened.
2. To restore a previous version, the folder on your Synology NAS that you
are backing up data to must have version control enabled. Go to DSM >

Synology Drive Admin Console > Team Folder > Versioning to configure
version control.
