INSTRUCTIONS
The Stitches
Written in US term

magic ring dc – double crochet

ch – chain dc blo –double crochet back loop only
sl st – slip stitch tr – treble
sc – single crochet tr blo – treble back loop only
sc blo – single crochet back loop only inc – increase
hdc – half double crochet dec – decrease
hdc blo – half double crochet yo – yarn over
back loop only
Special Stitches:
SC/HDC/DC/TR Back Loop Only – A stitch has a front and back loop that
meet at one end and look like an horizontal V (looks like this >). To crochet in
the back loop only, insert the hook in the middle of the V from top and
under the back loop (the loop that is away from you), yo and draw a loop
(you will have 2 loops on the hook). From this point on, continue to crochet
the stitch you wanted as usual.

2
First Treble In The Row – sc in the first stitch, ch3. Compared to the usual
method of crocheting a treble in the first row (ch4), this method of
constructing it will eliminate the gap that usually occurs.

Gauge

Keep the tension relaxed, if your work is too tight, the ends will curl. Use one
size up hook to make the foundation chain and first row.

Using the yarn weight and hook size suggested in this pattern will create a
blanket size 110cm by 130cm (39.5in by 29.5in). Gauge for the blanket for a
10cm by 10cm (3.9in by 3.9in) area is 6 rows by 7 stitches.

About

For your convenience, this pattern contains the illustrated tutorial at

the beginning, and the print-friendly pattern with no pictures and large print
at the end.

This beautiful 2 in 1 hooded blanket is also a decoration for your room.

Use it to keep warm and snugly, and when you are done with it, fold it and
display it on your sofa, bed or armchair.

The blanket is suitable for girls or boys alike and comes in two version:
triceratops or stegosaurus so you can choose the design you like best.

3
The blanket is designed to be a full body blanket. The pattern includes
child and adult size hood and mittens. The blanket can also be customized to
fit a child or an adult and the pattern is explained in a way that you can
make it as big or small as you would like it to be.

Made with super chunky (super bulky / #6) yarn, this blanket is warm
and soft, and works up in no time.

This pattern will create a blanket size 110cm by 130cm (43.5in by 51in).
To customize the blanket, measure the distance from wrist to wrist (with the
hands stretched) for the width and shoulder to floor for the length.

Supplies Used For This Pattern

 13 x 100g balls of super chunky (super bulky/ #6) in green

 2 x 100g balls of super chunky (super bulky/ #6) in gray
 small quantity of dk yarn (light worsted yarn) in gray for the 3 horns
and eyes
 small quantities of dk yarn (light worsted yarn) in white and black for
the eyes (optional)
 polyfill stuffing
 crochet hooks sizes 4mm and 10mm (optional a 11mm hook for the
initial chain and first row if you are a tight crocheter)
 blunt sewing needle to fit the yarn used to stitch the parts together
 scissors
 sewing pins

As this is a blanket made specifically for a teenager, I will list the rough sizes
and quantities needed to make a standard blanket for a child and and adult.
Hopefully this will help you decide how much yarn you will need for your
project.

1. child size – 100cm wide (wrist to wrist) and 100cm tall (shoulder to
floor)
– 9 x 100g balls of super chunky (super bulky/ #6) in green
– 1 x 100g ball of super chunky (super bulky/ #6) in gray

4
2. adult size – 125cm wide (wrist to wrist) and 125cm tall (shoulder to
floor)
– 16 x 100g balls of super chunky (super bulky/ #6) in green
– 2 x 100g ball of super chunky (super bulky/ #6) in gray

The Pattern
The blanket is made out of 7 different patterns, choose your design and
make the parts need:
– 1 x blanket (triceratops & stegosaurus)
– 1 x hood that comes in adult and child size (triceratops & stegosaurus)
– 2 x mittens that come in adult and child size (triceratops &
stegosaurus)
– 8 x spikes (stegosaurus)
– 3 x horns (triceratops)
– 5 x back plates (triceratops)
– 2 x eyes small (triceratops) – optional

The Hooded Blanket

5
The hooded blanket is made of 3 parts:

– the actual blanket

– the hood
– the mittens

The Blanket

To customize the blanket to your required size, chain multiple of 14 + 4 to

make up the width.

If you are a tight crocheter, use one size larger hook to make the foundation
chain and first row (in this case I used a 11mm hook, then a 10mm hook to
complete the blanket).

As a useful rule of thumb:

– the pattern is a repeat of 2 rows: rows of long wave pattern with rows
of single crochet stitches
– based on the stitches located 2 rows below: sc on top of a tr, hdc on
top of a dc, dc on top of a hdc, tr on top of a sc

6
– the first treble in the row is constructed according to the method
explained in the 'Special Stitches' section on page 2 and will just be
referred as treble blo (tr blo) in the pattern to make it easier to follow,
feel free to use any method you might like to crochet it, this the
method that worked best for me
– end the blanket with a row of sc, it will look neat and balanced

The blanket is made in green super chunky (super bulky/#6) yarn using a
10mm hook.

Row 1: ch88 (14 x 6 times + 4)

Row 2: sc in 3rd ch from hook, sc, *2hdc, 2dc, 3tr, 2dd, 2hdc,3sc*, repeat
sequence until the end of the row, turn

Row 3: sc in each stitch, turn

Row 4: 3tr blo, *2dc blo, 2hdc blo, 3sc blo, 2hdc blo, 2dc blo, 3tr blo* ,
repeat sequence until the end of the row, turn

Row 5: sc in each stitch, turn

Repeat rows 4 & 5 until the required length is achieved.

For the purpose of this tutorial I made a smaller swatch to show you how to
crochet the long wave pattern. See below the step by step illustrated tutorial
or visit www.craftinghappiness.co.uk for the full tutorial with diagram and
video.

The Mittens

16
The pattern for mittens comes in adult and child size. Make two in gray
super chunky (super bulky/#6) yarn using a 10mm hook.

Work in the round without turning, use a piece of yarn or a stitch marker to
mark the beginning of the rows. The number at the end of each round is the
number of stitches you should have.

Adult Size

The adult size measures 20cm (8in) tall and 13cm (5in) wide.

Round 1: create a magic ring, 8sc in the ring = 8

Round 2: *inc, sc*, repeat until the end = 12

Round 3: *inc, 2sc*, repeat until the end = 16

Round 4: *inc, 3sc*, repeat until the end = 20

Rounds 5 – 14: sc in each stitch = 20

Child Size

The child size measures 15cm (6in) tall and 10cm (4in) wide.

Round 1: create a magic ring, 8sc in the ring = 8

Round 2: *inc, sc*, repeat until the end = 12

Round 3: *inc, 2sc*, repeat until the end = 16

Rounds 4 – 12: sc in each stitch = 16

Assembling The Blanket

The blanket has a wrong side and a right side as seen in the pictures below.

17
Lay the blanket with the wrong side up (the textured side), place the hood
with the open part up on the width side of the blanket.

Join the hood to the blanket, in the middle, with the slip stitch method. You
should have 14 stitches left on one side and 13 stitches on the other side.

With gray super chunky (super bulky/#6), crochet a row of single crochet
stitches all around the blanket and hood making sure you are crocheting 3sc
stitches in each corner to form the corner.

18
Place the mittens at the corners on either side of the hood and join them to
the edge with the slip stitch method as in the picture (10 stitches for the
adult mittens and 8 stitches for the child mittens).

Stegosaurus

For the stegosaurus version, you will need 8 spikes.

Make them in gray DK (light worsted) yarn using a 4mm hook. Work in the
round without turning, using a piece of yarn or a stitch maker to mark the
beginning of the round.

19
Round 1: create a magic ring, make 6sc inside it, close the magic ring my
pulling the end of the yarn string = 6

Round 2: *inc, sc*, repeat until the end = 9

Round 3: sc in each stitch until the end = 9

Round 4: *inc, 2sc*, repeat until the end = 12

Round 5: sc in each stitch until the end = 12

Round 6: *inc, 3sc*, repeat until the end = 15

Round 7: sc in each stitch until the end = 15

Round 8: *inc, 4sc*, repeat until the end = 18

Round 9: sc in each stitch until the end = 18

Round 10: *inc, 5sc*, repeat until the end = 21

Round 11: sc in each stitch until the end = 21

Round 12: *inc, 6sc*, repeat until the end = 24

Round 13: sc in each stitch until the end = 24

20
Round 14: *inc, 7sc*, repeat until the end = 27

Round 15: sc in each stitch until the end = 27

Round 16: *inc, 8sc*, repeat until the end = 30

Round 17: sc in each stitch until the end = 30

Round 14: flatten the spike and sl st through both sides to close the bottom,
fasten off = 15

Fold the blanket in half on the length (including the hood) as in the photo
and place spikes approximately 15cm (6in) apart, 4 on the hood and 4 on the
blanket, then sew them on.

Your stegosaurus blanket is now complete.

– 2 head horns
– 1 nose horn
– 5 head plates
– 2 eyes

The Head Horns

Make 2 in gray DK (light worsted) yarn using a 4mm hook. Work in the round
without turning, using a piece of yarn or a stitch maker to mark the
beginning of the round.

my pulling the end of the yarn string = 6

Round 2: sc in each stitch until the end = 6

Round 3: *inc, sc*, repeat until the end = 9

Round 4: sc in each stitch until the end = 9

Round 5: *inc, 2sc*, repeat until the end = 12

Round 6: sc in each stitch until the end = 12

22
Round 7: *inc, 3sc*, repeat until the end = 15

Round 8: sc in each stitch until the end = 15

Round 9: 7sc, inc, 7sc = 16

Round 10: sc in each stitch until the end = 16

Round 11: inc, 15sc = 17

Round 12: sc in each stitch until the end = 17

Round 13: 8sc, inc, 8sc = 18

Round 14: sc in each stitch until the end = 18

Round 15: inc, 17sc = 19

Rounds 16 - 19: sc in each stitch until the end, fasten off = 19

The Nose Horns

Make the horn in gray DK (light worsted) yarn using a 4mm hook. Work in
the round without turning, using a piece of yarn or a stitch maker to mark
the beginning of the round.

23
Round 1: make a magic ring and crochet 6sc inside it, close the magic ring
my pulling the end of the yarn string = 6

Round 2: sc in each stitch until the end = 6

Round 3: *inc, sc*, repeat until the end = 9

Round 4: sc in each stitch until the end = 9

The Head Plates

Make 5 using a 10mm hook and green and gray super chunky (super
bulky/#6) yarn. Work in the round, without turning, using a piece of yarn or
a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.

24
With green, make a magic ring.

Round 1: 12sc in the magic ring, close the magic ring my pulling the end of
the yarn string = 12

Round 2: 1sc, 2sc in next stitch, 1sc, 2sc in next stitch, 2hdc in next stitch,
2sc in the next stitch, 1sc, 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc, 3sl st, sl st in the first sc
stitch, fasten off.

Change colors to gray and join it in the same stitch you made the last sl st.

Round 3: 1sc in same stitch, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc, 2hdc in the same
stitch, 1hdc, 2hdc in the same stitch, 2dc, 2hdc in the same stitch, 1hdc,
2hdc in the same stitch, 1sc, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc, fasten off.

The Eyes

If you want your triceratops to have eyes, I have included a pattern for it.
Make two in DK (light worsted) yarn in white, black and gray using a 4mm
hook.

With black, make a magic ring

Round 1: 10sc, sl st in the first sc and fasten off, close the magic ring my
pulling the end of the yarn string = 10

25
Round 2: join the white yarn in any stitch you want, sc in same stitch, inc, sc,

same stitch, 6sc, 2hdc in the following chain, 1dc, 2hdc in the following
chain, 7sc, 2sc in the following stitch, sl st in the first stitch and fasten off.

Assembling The Triceratops

Join the 5 head plates to each other as in the picture, using the slip stitch
method (join 5 stitches from the bottom).

Position the middle head plate in the middle of the hood and sew them to
the hood between rows 13 and 14 ( from the front of the hood, including
the gray row).

26
Fill the 2 bigger horns with polyfil stuffing and sew them in front on the head
plates on the 12th row, approximately 8 stitches apart, as in the photo.

Fill the smaller horn and sew it on the the front of the hood, positioned
between the large horns.

Finally, if you chose your blanket to have eyes, sew them on each side.

Your triceratops blanket is complete.

27
Folding The Blanket

Place the blanket with the inside side facing up.

Fold each side and then roll the blanket from the bottom until your reach
the hood. Fold the hood over the blanket.

The adult size measures 20cm (8in) tall and 13cm (5in) wide.

36
Round 1: create a magic ring, 8sc in the ring = 8

Round 2: *inc, sc*, repeat until the end = 12

Round 3: *inc, 2sc*, repeat until the end = 16

Round 4: *inc, 3sc*, repeat until the end = 20

Rounds 5 – 14: sc in each stitch = 20

Assembling The Blanket

Join the hood to the blanket on the width side, in the middle, with
the slip stitch method. You should have 14 stitches left on one side
and 13 stitches on the other side.

With gray super chunky (super bulky/#6), crochet a row of single

crochet stitches all around the blanket and hood making sure you
are crocheting 3sc stitches in each corner to form the corner.

37
Place the mittens at the corners on either side of the hood and join
them to the edge with the slip stitch method as in the picture (10
stitches for the adult mittens and 8 stitches for the child mittens).

Stegosaurus

For the stegosaurus version, you will need 8 spikes.

Make them in gray DK (light worsted) yarn using a 4mm hook. Work
in the round without turning, using a piece of yarn or a stitch maker
to mark the beginning of the round.

Round 1: create a magic ring, make 6sc inside it, close the magic
ring my pulling the end of the yarn string = 6

Round 2: *inc, sc*, repeat until the end = 9

Round 3: sc in each stitch until the end = 9

Round 4: *inc, 2sc*, repeat until the end = 12

Round 17: sc in each stitch until the end = 30

Round 14: flatten the spike and sl st through both sides to close the
bottom, fasten off = 15

Fold the blanket in half on the length (including the hood) as in the
photo and place spikes approximately 15cm (6in) apart, 4 on the
hood and 4 on the blanket, then sew them on.

Your stegosaurus blanket is now complete.
