Aqueous exterior wall or facade paints decorate
and protect the urban world. How grey would our
cities be, how bleak our villages and settlements,
if we wouldn’t paint the walls in a brilliant white,
a gentle orange, or in a deep blue!
Facade protection is essential for long-lasting con-
servation and therefore for the value of a building.
Given their size and visibility, facades require coa-
tings that provide protection and resistance against
the elements, and long-term aesthetic durability
while meeting increasingly demanding environmen-
tal standards.
Walls have to stay beautiful for a long time and,
therefore, paints must resist rain, sunshine, and
other harsh weather conditions and permanently
protect the coated wall.
To ensure a beautiful appearance and the value
preservation of the wall, dirt pick-up, cracks, and
efflorescence have to be avoided for as long as
possible. Furthermore, the coating must be compa-
tible with the construction physics of the substrate,
and resist algae, fungi, and lichen growth.

Today modern architecture and design solutions
have to complement the basic performance inclu-
ding excellent dirt pick-up resistance and avoidance
of microbiological growth. As increasing emphasis
is put on the aesthetic aspects of buildings, the
preservation of the original appearance of the de-
sign is key. For example the increasing use of spe-
cial finishes, amongst them deep tone or brilliant
colors, require new solutions.
Binders for modern paints must fulfill numerous
criteria resulting from ecological and health-and-
safety considerations. As a consequence of the
increasing environmental awareness, VOC-free
exterior paints, as well as paints that do not leach
components and hence retain critical functionality
for a longer period of time, are becoming more
and more important.
Furthermore, the exterior paint must fulfill the basic
requirements of any paint like storage stability,
hiding, gloss, compliance with different ecological
standards, and rheological properties for easy
application of the paint.

Technologies
Amongst our 100% water-based binder portfolio
we offer styrene acrylics, pure acrylics, and nano-
composites. We offer universal binders for various
applications like facade paints and textured finishes,
as well as binders with special features such as
hydrophobicity, superior performance in colored
wall coatings, or marble stone finishes.
If requested, our low MFT binders allow the formu-
lation of paints and plasters without any coalescent.
For specific paint systems, like silicate paints, we
also offer suitable waterglass systems (Trasol) and
polymer binders for modification.
Finally, our extensive additive range allows formu-
lation adjustments to the right rheology, visual and
non-visual (such as mechanical) surface properties.

have to be fulfilled.
Acronal® EDGE 6295 is the ideal solution for paints
with improved color retention, which also means
increasing the durability of facade paints. Combined
with our additives (e.g. Dispex® AA 4135 and Rheo-
vis® PE 1330) as well as our Luconyl® NG Colorants,
we now offer a comprehensive solution to the pro-
blem of fast fading facades.
