MPU3322 PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
JOURNAL REFLECTION – INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
LECTURER : DR ANTOON
1. What are your views on business and professional ethics before taking the course?
Differentiate between what you already know about ethics (knowledge), what you
do – or can do – in (un)ethical situations (skills) and what you believe or feel about
ethics (attitude).

Before I took this course, my knowledge on business and professional ethics were very
normal. I figured ethics is essentially about the general and universal moral principles that
we observe in our everyday lives. My point of view on ethics was just about having good
behaviour in both public and college among people.

Before I enrolled this subject of professional ethics, I did not know the true importance of
ethics in the business.

Also I think Professional Ethics is an ethics that we should have as a professional that has a
profession. Other than that, the general aspects of Professional Ethics should be applied for
everyone, even if they do not have a profession, it is also an important thing that we should
learn as a human in this society. The reason I 'm saying that professional ethics is important
for a particular profession, and because as a profession, if you're doing your job carelessly,
you wouldn't know the consequences you've been carelessly doing your job. For example, if
you are a doctor, your task as a doctor is to heal the sickness or disease that is present in
your patients and treat them until they are truly healed from disease or illness. Also, you've
done it with sincerity heart while you're treating the patients. For instance, if you're doing
the surgery for your patients, don't do it carelessly, if you do, it would also make the patient
suffer more, the sickness or disease they 'd get bigger than before, more importantly it
might make the patient die.

My point of view on attitude is that attitude influences one 's behaviour. Under other
circumstances people are behaving according to their attitude. Condition such as expecting
a favourable outcome are some of the examples due to personal experience. Attitudes will
change according to the situation. Taking an organization and an employee as an example
where the employee gets treated bad everyday at his workplace by the superiors so the
attitude of the employee will be different such angry or sad or can be anything where as
putting the situation like, the organization gives employees real compliments randomly
through the day, both about work tasks and personal items such as saying your like a
person's shirt. If in a situation like this the attitude will be different. Attitudes do impact our
behaviour, but they are not imposed on stone within us. They could be changed for
betterment. Attitudes get formed from experience. They are formed over the years either
from observation or from experience. They can be learned in a variety of ways. Even a
simple advertisement could influence you and may even have a change on your thoughts
about a particular product.

Rewards team success with a surprise lunch catered for the office. Hold team meetings in
which each member takes a moment to recognize little successes. This could be a simple as
a morning huddle, in which each person on the team talks about a success from the day
before, and one thing that he might be struggling with, so he can get assistance.

YOU CAN ANSWER Q1 MORE DIRECTLY BY USING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS (NOW MISSING) AND
ATTITUDE AS SUBHEADINGS. SO, WHAT DO I KNOW ALREADY, WHAT CAN I DO ALREADY
AND WHAT’S MY OVERALL ATTITUDE TOWARDS ETHICS B E F O R E THE COURSE. THAT’S
WHAT Q1 WANTS YOU TO ANSWER.
2. Choose one PE file, take one of the topics you learnt about and explore that topic
from a personal perspective. Tell us why you have chosen the topic and make sure
you can relate it to personal experiences or goals. What are the implications and
challenges for business, professional and/or workplace ethics?

The topic I have chosen is PE4 ‘Ethical Decision Making’. I selected this topic because we
make decisions every day, both personally and professionally, because decision-making
plays a large part. Determining what to wear to work, which route to get there and even
what food we are going to eat are all decisions that affect our lives. From a technical point
of view, decision taking is an important part of our work. Being a good decision maker
allows us to trust our skill, while the reverse is true if we choose to make decisions hurriedly
without properly contemplating the ramifications of those decisions and their impacts
across functional units.

To make a decision is a very important job and importance to me, based on my personal
experience. I was assigned in my college as group leader for a group assignment to a
subject. In this group project my decision-making plays an important part. I had to separate
my 4 group mates from the tasks. As a leader in this assignment I should not be egoistic or
biased. Whatever the party distribution issues, I have to take full responsibility. The positive
result of my decision-making would be gaining trust, gaining respect from others and also
being compassionate.

My group mates and also myself will be affected by the consequences of my bad decision
making. It will create unnecessary conflicts between mates of the group and I will gain a bad
reputation amongst students and lecturers. Every week I still plan for a special place to
address the community assignment. Before I make a decision, I shall discuss and ask my
group mates for their opinion. We did a good job in that group assignment with good
communication skills and decision-making skills, and gained appreciation from our lecturers.
3. Share one business or professional ethical issue, dilemma or constraint you faced
and how you dealt with it. Relate your experience to relevant ethical theories
and/or concepts.

The professional ethical issue that I faced was during my internship at Le Meridian, I was at
the Royal Club Lounge working at the bar as usual. One day when I was taking care of the
bar, a VIP guest approached my senior staff and demanded a table for him as he came
during the peak of the cocktail hour and all the tables were occupied. Since he was a regular
guest we had to take care of him personally but there were no tables for him and he refused
to wait and wanted a table immediately. My senior staff told him to wait for a while, while
he checks for a free table. My senior staff had to entertain other guest and he forgot about
the VIP guest. The VIP guest called me and yelled at me and told me what was going on and
since I was only an intern I couldn`t take an immediate action at the same time I had to take
care of the guest. So then I explained to him that I’m an intern I will try my best to get a
table as soon as possible meanwhile I had asked him to have a seat in the meeting room but
the problem was food was not strictly not allowed in the meeting room. Since he is a VIP & a
regular guest I told him to have some drinks and take a seat in the meeting room while I find
him a table. And for my luck there was another 2 guest who was finishing their dinner and I
was waiting for them to leave so that I can arrange the table immediately for the guest.
Once they left I soon cleaned up and arranged the table for the VIP and escorted him to the
table. Finally he was pleased with my service and offered me some tip.

I CAN’T HELP BUT THINK I’VE READ THIS BEFORE. DID YOU ALSO TAKE DCS3301 AT DIPLOMA
LEVEL?
4. What have you have learnt about business and professional ethics in terms of
knowledge, skills and attitude that may be useful in your professional life?

KNOWLEDGE

I've learned that not only in private life, but also in business matters, ethical importance.
People want to be part of the organization, as they perceive its purpose and activity to
benefit society. Possibly one of the valid reasons for ethical consideration on the part of
organizations is the basic ethical needs.

From this subject of professional ethics, I have learned a lot of moral values, and SKILLS also
how to behave professionally in a business. Professionals exhibit such values as honesty and
integrity. They keep their word, and implicit trust can be put in them. I've learned they 're
never sacrificing their beliefs, and they're going to do the right thing, even if it's a tougher
path.

KNOWLEDGE?

Professional ethics are representative of us. Strong ethical awareness will help us earn a
good name and reputation in our profession. We have to have a positive attitude in our
career and also in our everyday lives. A person with a positive attitude in his career may
become a leader for his team.

In summary, business and professional ethics are important if a person is to succeed in the
hotelier sector. The values and lessons considered for us serve as a guideline for being a
professional hotelier.
