Assignment 2

1. A spherical fuel oil tank of radius R sits on


an annular ring support, as shown in Figure.
The oil density is ρ and the oil level is a
distance bR from the crown of the tank.
a) Find the meridional stress just above the
support ring.
b) Find the value of b for which this stress is
numerically a maximum.
The self-weight of the tank can be neglected

2. Calculate the nodal displacements, element forces, and reaction forces for
the shown figure

3. A pipe is used for the main support of an earth-moving scraper, Fig. 3 (a) &
(b). Replace the pipe with a hollow square made of the same material, such
that the torsional rigidity (GK) remains the same. Find the thickness “t” of
the square tube that satisfies this requirement, Fig. 3 (c).
