Assignment #1
Hydraulic Jump (2018)
1. A hydraulic jump exists in a trapezoidal channel having a bed width of 7.0 m and
side slopes of 1:1. The flowing discharge is 25 m3/s. Construct the specific force
diagram and get the two conjugate depths knowing that the height of the jump is 1.0 m.
Find also the head lost and the dissipated energy power.

2. Water flows under the gate of a regulator with coefficient of contraction Cc=0.65. If
the downstream water depth away from the gate is 2.0m and water flows with a
discharge of q=3.0 m3/s/m, find:
a. The maximum gate opening (d) for the hydraulic jump to occur.
b. The water depth upstream the gate assuming no head losses through the gate.
c. Find the force on the gate in tons/m width of the gate.
d. If the gate opening is reduced to d2=0.4m without affecting the discharge
flowing through the canal. Find the water depth upstream the gate.
e. If the gate opening is increased to d3=0.7m while keeping the flowing
discharge the same, Find the new force on the gate in tons/m width of the
gate.

3. Considering a dissipation basin at the downstream end of a spillway, the total

discharge is Q=2000 m3/s. The energy dissipation structure is located in a horizontal
rectangular channel (25 m wide). The flow depth at the downstream end of the spillway
is 2.3 m. Compute the energy dissipation in the basin and the rate of air entrainment.

4. A discharge of 30 m3/s passes through a channel having a 3 m wide rectangular

cross-section. The angle between the channel bed and the horizontal plane is 8.5°. A
hydraulic jump occurs at a depth of 0.7 m. Determine the following:
• the conjugate depth of the hydraulic jump,
• the jump length, and
• the energy head loss within the jump.

5. A 12 m wide spillway discharges 280 m3/s of water into a stilling basin. The reservoir
level upstream of the spillway is 60 m above datum. The water level in the river
downstream of the spillway is 30 m above datum. Assuming no energy is dissipated in
the flow down the spillway, do the following:
a) If the width of stilling basin is the same as the spillway width, determine the stilling
basin invert level required to form the hydraulic jump in the basin.
b) If the invert level of the stilling basin should be no lower than 22.5 m above datum,
determine the minimum width of the stilling basin to form the hydraulic jump in the
basin.
