SENEGAL
History
Senegal, located on the west coast of Africa, has a rich
history that spans centuries. It was part of various West
African empires, including the Ghana Empire and the
Mali Empire. The region was influenced by Arab traders
and later became a significant center for the trans-
Saharan trade.
In the 15th century, Portuguese explorers arrived on the
Senegalese coast, initiating European contact. The Dutch,
English, and French also established trading posts, and
by the 17th century, Senegal became a focal point for
European colonial interests.
The French eventually gained control over Senegal in the
19th century, incorporating it into French West Africa.
Senegal played a crucial role in the political and cultural
movements that led to independence across Africa in the
mid-20th century.
Senegal achieved independence from France on April 4,
1960, with Léopold Sédar Senghor becoming its first
president. Senegal has since been known for its stability,
democratic traditions, and cultural vibrancy. The country
