I. PLACEMAKING
By definition, placemaking is defined as a multi-faceted concept of planning,
designing, and managing public spaces aiming to foster the locality’s vision, needs,
potential and aspirations. It is an idea that redefines public spaces to become the
focal point of the community, inspiring the locales and strengthening the connection
of the people and the established spaces. As an idea that aims to improve the
condition of the community, placemaking facilitates the creation of patterns that
focuses on cultural and social attributes to achieve the ideals of a complete
community. Complete communities, per se, seeks to promote inclusivity, interactive
and sustainable environment. Embracing these ideals brings our community into life,
more vibrant and livable.

Placemaking improves the social interaction among the users, promoting the
community’s culture and fosters the neighborhood’s sense of identity. By bringing the
concept of placemaking in public spaces, the neighborhood becomes inclusive and
inviting because it provides features that the community can be proud of. Public
attraction is essential in placemaking. When the users enjoy a certain place because
of its social and physical attributes, the concept of placemaking in effect.

II. STRATEGIES ON PLACEMAKING

The 3 different strategies on placemaking is anchored on the UN-Habitat's
"Placemaking and the Future of Cities". Describe how it will improve the public
spaces.
1. Improve streets as places. This strategy aims to engage the people, the
government, and the transportation agency to redefine the planning and design of
transit networks and streets to promote environmental sustainability, civic
engagement and economic vitality while addressing the needs of the users in
terms of mobility. Improving the streets as places will ensure that vehicular
accessibility and improved pedestrian and transit circulation will be served while
integrating the importance of health, sustainability and community building int the
design process.
2. Create squares and parks as multi-use destinations. Squares and parks
provide great value in the community and for the people. These areas serve as
the center of the neighborhood where people relax, gather and interact after their
tedious daily schedules. As cities becomes more crowded, the need for open
spaces is imperative. These spaces are helpful to provide more inviting places to
accommodate the leisure activities of the citizens open for all ages.
3. Build local economies through markets. Building local economies through
markets can help small businesses to prosper and create more attractive
destinations for the shoppers. Repurposing empty spaces in the market and
creating a widened pedestrian route allows easier access for the users giving
them a safer and inviting space while welcoming more opportunities for
employment and entrepreneurship. Redesigning the markets with a structured
and regulatory framework will improve the mobility of the users without clogging
the streets and unfair competition with the local businesses.
