RATIONALE
Laptop computers or also known as notebooks, are portable computers that you can take
with you and use in different environments (Christensson, P., 2006). They include a screen,
keyboard, and a trackpad or trackball, which serves as the mouse. Because laptops are meant to be
used on the go, they have a battery which allows them to operate without being plugged into a
power outlet. Laptops also include a power adapter that allows them to use power from an outlet
and recharges the battery.
According to Alison Pandev (2018), the word briefcase originated from the legal field. In
law, a brief is a summary of facts and legal positions that support specific arguments in court
proceedings. Lawyers would carry their briefs in a case, therefore coining the term briefcase.
Similar to an attaché, briefcases are also flat, rectangular, and typically used to transport papers,
books, and an occasional laptop. Unlike an attaché case, a briefcase opens into one main
compartment. The lid may contain additional pockets or gussets that can expand to provide extra
storage space if needed. Most briefcases are made from leather and are typically bulkier than an
attaché, allowing more room for storage.
The present innovation relates to a bag that can hold a laptop and has a special feature that
can transform the bag into a desk, in which it can be easily assembled and disassembled without
requiring a large amount of space. This is useful most likely to students considering that they can
use it in any place and they will be able to have a convenient work surface for supporting a laptop
or a book for example.
The researchers intended to present the innovation that relates to carry bags to be used by
any person who has a laptop, as its idea is to provide a design in which the laptop is readily removed
from the bag for hand-held use, which also provides a support structure for the laptop during non-
hand-held use. The support structure is capable of being rapidly assembled and disassembled. Its
significant advantage of the product is to provide a means wherein a bag can be transformed into
a desk to support a laptop, as well as it could be a carry bag that protects the laptop during travel.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research aims to evaluate respondent’s perception via online survey on the designed
"Laptop Desk Bag" product for Students in providing a support structure for the laptop during
hand-held use and non-hand-held use. It will be handled during the 1st semester of the year 2020.
In particular, it tries to answer the queries that follow.
● What are the features of the” Laptop Desk Bag”?
● What is the overall rate of the respondents on the developed product “Laptop Desk
Bag”?
● What are the assessments and evaluations of the respondents to the developed
product “Laptop Desk Bag” in terms of the functionality, features and design?
● What are the views and feedback of the respondents on the “Laptop Desk Bag”?
When seeking data to address research questions, the researchers will distribute surveys
through online questionnaires regarding the effectiveness of the product Laptop Desk Bag. The
target market of the product are students who have a laptop in which they can use the designed

1
product in any place and they will be able to have a convenient work surface for supporting a
laptop, as well as it could be a carry bag that protects the laptop during travel.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This Study covers the concept of how respondents measure the students' efficacy of the
innovative and combined designed product “Laptop Desk Bag”. A sample population from Iligan
City is used as respondents to the survey questionnaires of this research. The study is limited only
to one-hundred two (102) respondents who are students, professionals and parents across the city.
The product refers to a bag that can carry a laptop and has a special function that can
transform the bag into a desk that can be quickly assembled and disassembled without the need for
a large amount of space. This is useful particularly to students because they can use it in any
position and it would be able to provide a comfortable work surface to support a laptop or a book.

2
Also, the product is suitable in keeping the laptop without having any fear of slipping or dropping
it off to the ground while carrying it. Its security is important as well as its maintenance. Material
like leather is known to be durable material for laptop bags. Laptop bags are often reinforced with
several layers of foam and fabric to serve as a shock-absorber for the laptop. It is also crucial to
ensure that the buckles, magnets and zips are in perfect condition.
In addition, the basis for assessing the functionality, features and design of the developed
laptop desk bag and the evaluation of the developed product was limited to the adopted
questionnaire.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This presents the patents, literature and studies related to the study conducted. These
written articles are cited to back up the study conducted.
RELATED LITERATURE
History of Laptop
It is a little hard to determine which was the first portable or laptop computer since the
earliest portable computers to arrive did not look anything like the book-sized folding laptops that
we are familiar with today (Mary Bellis 2019). However, they were both portable and can sit on a
person's lap and did eventually lead to the development of notebook style laptops.
According to (Ross Stone, 2020), the first portable computer was invented in April 1976
by Xerox PARC Company. This one was called the Xerox Note Taker because it was designed to
implement new technology and show what could be done. People that helped in the design were
Adele Goldberg, Douglas Fairbairn and Larry Tesler. It had slow processing speeds, mouse, floppy
disk drive and very high cost of production, because there have been huge improvements over the
years, advancement of technologies are very rampant and laptops have become more useful and
convenient than what they were known for in the past. Operating systems have become much more
advanced than the old ones. Laptops become more thinner, convenient and less heavy than their
old models. As technology advances, laptops continue to improve.
People usually purchase laptops due to its portability and convenience, it can also be
brought elsewhere to work on. Most of the people who buy laptops are working people and
students because it can easily be carried around and is good for storing homework.
History of Bag
Utilized by men and women alike, bags and purses were practical everyday items which
essentially made life easier (lili, 2018). At the most basic level, a bag carries important personal
effects that need to be mobile. In brief, it is a vital tool which helps in everyday life. It’s important
to realize that the birthplace was a necessity. Bags have participated in the “Supply/Demand”
evolution; they reflect not only necessity but also personal style. As a result of a person’s need to
have their personal effects conveniently close, the bag came to be more than a transport tool. In
sum, the bag developed to not only provide necessity and convenience but also to reinforce status.
According to Dolorest Monet (2020), The handbag is an essential element of a woman's
wardrobe that is both functional and fashionable. Used to carry wallets, lipstick, and other
essentials, handbags can be as simple as a drawstring denim bag or a high priced, designer status
symbol. Throughout most of history, both men and women used handbags for practical purposes.
Ancient people used bags to carry weapons, tools, food, and flint (for fire making). Otzi the
Iceman, a 5,300-year-old, well preserved mummy found in the Italian Alps in 1991, had a pouch
attached to his belt containing flint, a drill, an awl, and dried fungus. Egyptians of the Old Kingdom
(2686 - 2160 BC) used double handled bags made of linen and papyrus. The Ancient Greeks
carried byrsa, or coin purses hung from the belt which could be hidden in folds of clothing.
Archaeologists discovered an ornamental leather purse in an Anglo-Saxon burial mound in
Britain (Dolorest Monet 2020). Dated to 625 CE (AD), the bag had deteriorated but showed
evidence of gilt, silver, and garnet ornamentation and probably hung from straps on a belt. The
4
purse still contained 40 gold coins. A Byzantine relic pouch from the 9th century was found at St.
Michael's in Switzerland. Lined in red silk, the bag featured embroidered lions on a blue
background.
According to the History of Bags and Purses by The Nation (2018), In the 20th century, art
and fashion movements came and went in rapid succession and the handbag evolved alongside.
However, women’s emancipation was the most influential factor in the shaping of the handbag.
More and more women were employed and as they became more mobile, their handbags had to
meet a growing variety of practical needs. This resulted in all sorts of bags for specific purposes
such as leather document cases for going to the office, practical leather and plastic daytime bags
for walking and visiting, elegant, sparkling bags and minaudières (metal clutches) for evening use.
A bag improves protection, privacy and enables personal customization during the journey
of the traveler. Its features have developed to represent and reflect its patrons in a distinctive way.
With this in mind, the bag has been repeatedly outrigged during its development with combinations
of designs to suit different purposes as well as occasions. A new sign of the times is expressed in
bags. Bags, used by men and women alike, were functional daily items that ultimately made life
simpler. A bag holds substantial personal belongings that need to be portable at the most basic
level. In short, it is a critical instrument in daily life that helps.
History of Desk
According to the blog of Progressive Desk (2019), For several hundred years the term
“desk” implied something portable, even when fitted with small drawers and made large enough
to store several books and various writing tools. The word “desk” originated from the Modern
Latin word “desca” which means “table to write on”, from the mid-14th century. The word desk
has been used figuratively since 1797. Eventually, desks were provided with stands and could
sometimes be confused with a new type of furniture known originally as an “escritoire”, or
“scriptor” (from the Latin word to write) designed primarily for writing. This new type of furniture
was originally made much like a legged cabinet, the front of which folded down to provide a
writing surface frequently lined with wool, hence the name “bureau” from the French word bure,
meaning wool.
A desk is a generally wooded piece of furniture and a type of useful table often used in a
school or office setting for various academic activities such as reading and writing on or using a
laptop or computer (Marc 2020). Not all desks have the form of a table. For instance, an armoire
desk is a desk built within a large wardrobe-like cabinet, and a portable desk is light enough to be
placed on a person’s lap. Since many people lean on a desk while using it, a desk must be sturdy.
According to Anna Scott (2020), studying from your own desk, in a quiet space, allows
you to settle down and completely focus. Whether you set yourself study time restrictions or you
power through until your work is complete, a desk encourages you to create a study area that is
productive and will help you see results. Studying at a desk allows you to separate your work and
your other activities. Often working at a desk can be more productive and can help ease the stress
and anxiety felt when essay or assignment pressure is too much.
According to Danny Hawkins (2010), there are several key benefits of using a laptop bag.
Many travels with their laptop and store a lot of important, work related information on them.
Transporting a laptop without some form of storage for it would be something any laptop owner

5
would look favorably upon. A bag for your laptop helps to not only shield the device from the
elements, but also adds a level of cushion. when traveling, your laptop is bound to knock against
something or be pressed against another piece of luggage, so having the necessary padding around
for protection is always desirable. Additionally, an adjustable strap makes it very convenient to
carry the bag at an individual’s own comfort level.

PATENT DATABASE
Carry bag with hinged support surface
Raymond Kam (2009) invented A carry bag that includes a compartment for receiving
items. A first rectangular panel is contiguous with the compartment. A second rectangular panel
located externally of the compartment is attached by a hinge to the first panel. One or more straps
is attached at or near the periphery of the second panel for securing the carry bag against the torso
of a user. The carry bag is adaptable between a first “backpack” configuration and a second “desk”
configuration in which the first panel forms a support surface extending away from the user's torso
above the compartment, and wherein in both said configurations, the second panel can be retained
substantially flat against the torso of a user by the straps.
Carrying case and variable-angle support stand for portable computer
Invented by Richard Prete and Pablo V. Vialera (1993), A carry case for a pen-based
computer. The case is of a design which minimizes its footprint, yet provides a variable tilt support
structure for the computer. Accordingly, the computer can be positioned at the optimum viewing
angle of the user during non-hand-held use, even under crowded working conditions. The case
allows the computer to be readily removed therefrom for hand-held use.
Portable, collapsible, workstation tray table apparatus
Norman Korpi (2010) invented an apparatus including a surface panel for supporting
objects in a first workspace. The surface panel includes a removable plug having a first flat surface
and a second surface comprising rectilinear fingers for supporting devices in a generally upright
position. A frame having a top side and a bottom side holds the surface panel above the top side
and enables the surface panel to be positioned at a plurality of angles relative to the frame.
Appendages joined to the frame and deployable from the frame enable the frame and the surface
panel to be supported a distance above a surface, where the distance is sufficient for enabling a
second workspace between the frame and the surface.
Drumsticks support bag
Peter Erskine (2006) invented an assembly for transporting and displaying multiple
drumsticks for access, comprising, in combination an enclosure for transport of drumsticks and a
stand, structure attached to the enclosure having collapsed position relative to the enclosure, for
transport, the structure having an alternative deployed position in which the stand can be attached
to said structure in upright supported position, there being a generally horizontal tray associated
with said structure in said deployed position, and drumsticks removed from the enclosure and
displayed on the tray for selective use by a drummer.

6
Convenient and comfortable desk
Wei Yanran (2012) invented the utility model related to a convenient and comfortable desk.
Its structure includes a shelf, a foot support and a standing bookshelf. It is characterized in that the
drawer shelf moves, and a left and right foot support is added between the horizontal supports of
the two sides of the table legs, the two front and rear legs on the right side are moved in parallel,
and a standing bookshelf is set on the upper part of the space that moves inward. Compared with
the prior art, the utility model has a larger space under the table, which is convenient for the user
to extend and flex and abduct the lower feet, stacking, bending and other postures and position
changes, retracting and relaxing alternately, and has a pedal support Pedaling on both feet makes
the weight of the lower limbs borne by the soles, soles and heels of the feet alternately, making it
more comfortable and less fatigued. The setting of the standing bookshelf can be clear at a glance,
making it extremely convenient to pick and place frequently used books. Therefore, the convenient
and comfortable desk of the present invention has good promotion and use value.
Storage bag for use with a student’s chair-desk
According to Wilma Rae Hargrove (1997), The present invention relates to a cloth bag for
storing a younger student's school supplies; i.e., crayons, such items to be carried by the student
from classroom to home and vice versa so that the bag of the present invention contemplates use
of a strap attached to the top thereof. Within the school room, the bag is used in conjunction with
a desk-chair which includes a chair having a seat and a back while the desk includes a planar
writing board attached to any upright column located near the front edge of the chair. The bag can
be hung at one side of the chair using the end of a rod also located so the top of the bag is adjacent
to the strap. The rod length is slightly longer than the seat depth. Result: the bag can be wedged
between support members of the desk-chair, but easily "unwedged'' for transport of the bag (and
contents) to another location without disassembly.
Laptop computer carrying case that transforms into a desktop
Invented by Kevin Mitchell (2010), A laptop computer carrying case transforms into a
desktop for use of a laptop or similar electronic device having a keyboard and a hinge ably
openable display. The laptop keyboard is held by bands in the lower portion of the case and the
display is held in the top section of the case. Hinge structures are provided on the left and right-
side walls of the bottom section of the case. When the hinge structures are pivotally angularly
separated, the bottom section containing the keyboard will be Substantially horizontal enabling
use of the laptop in a standing or mobile position. When the laptop is not being used, the case may
be closed and the hinge structures closed with the laptop being carried by the strap over the
shoulder. The hinge structure is provided with a structure for limiting the amount by which the
arms of the hinge may be pivotally angularly separated thereby providing stability to the laptop
case in the desk top position. Detent means it is provided to hold the arms of the hinge structure in
an aligned position when the case is being used to carry the laptop.
