b. differentiate the types of polygons; and
c. specify the importance of polygons through citing its application in real-life.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Polygons
B. References: Soaring 21st Century Mathematics 5 pp. 300-305
C. Instructional Materials: Laptop, PowerPoint Presentation, Worksheets
D. Time Allotment: 60 minutes (1 hour)

III. Instructional Activities

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Daily Routine
1. Prayer
Good morning my dearest grade
5! Good morning Ms. Mywill!

Before we start this wonderful day,

let us first seek guidance from our
dear Lord. Anyone who would like
to lead the prayer? (Students will raise their hands.)

Okay Sheena, kindly lead the

prayer.
Prayer….

Thank you Sheena for your

heartfelt prayer.

2. Greetings
Once again, good morning Good morning teacher Mywill.
children! Good morning classmates.
I am glad to see you again.

Fantastic! You are all energetic

today and seems like you are
ready for today’s discussion.

3. Classroom Management
But before that, kindly pick up the
pieces of paper around you. And (Students will pick up the pieces of
let me just remind you our paper around them and will listen to
classroom rules. their teacher as she explains the
classroom rules.)
(Teacher will shortly explain the
classroom rules)

Class, is that clear? Yes teacher!
Very good!

4. Checking of Attendance
Ms. Secretary, who is absent Ma’am there are no students absent
today? today.

That is good, and because of that G double O D J O B

give yourselves a good job clap. Good Job! Good Job! (Clap)

5. Motivation
Everybody stand up, we are going
to have a group energizer activity
called forming shapes. During this
activity, you will walk criss cross
through the room. And once I clap
my hands I will instruct you to
group yourselves into numbers
that I want and you need to form
in the shapes that I will tell.

And reminder in this exercise,

everyone needs to relinquish their
individual ideas in order to work
together as a group.

Do you understand class?

Yes teacher!
Let us start
(Students will walk inside the
classroom.)
(Teacher will clap her hands
and will tell her students to
group themselves into and
form the shape .)

Did you have fun? Yes teacher!

Great! That is good to hear. Later
we will have more fun activities.
B. Lesson Proper
1. Review
What was our last discussion? (Students will raise their hands.)
Yes, Niña Kinds of Angle

Very good!

What do we mean by angles? Yes, (Students will raise their hands.)

Allyssa Angle is formed by two rays with a
common endpoint called vertex.
Very good!

Let’s have a riddle that will serve (Students will raise their hands.)
as a review.
-I measure less than 90o, what am
I? Acute Angle
-I measure 110o, what am I? Obtuse Angle

Downloaded by Anthony Serrato (delosreyesanthony09@gmail.com)

-I measure 90o, what am I? Right Angle
-I measure 18o, what am I? Acute Angle
-I measure 180o, what am I? Straight Angle

Very good class seems like you

already mastered our previous 1, 2, ang galing
topic which is angles, so give 1, 2, ang galing
yourselves “ang galing clap”. 1, 2, ang galing galing

2. Activity
I prepared here a short activity for
you my dear grade 5 students,
and it is called shape hunting. All
you have to do is to write down on
your worksheet that I will be
giving you, as many different
geometric shapes you can see in
the pattern within 40 seconds.

Is that clear?
Yes teacher!
Are you all ready? Readying ready na kami!
Very good, let us start.

Find as many different geometric

shapes as you can in the pattern.

(During the 40 seconds they will write

down their answers.)

(Teacher will go around to monitor

her students while they are
answering.)

Okay, time is up, stop writing.

Let us now check the geometric
shapes that we have in the
pattern.

In the pattern we have square,

rectangle, triangle, diamond,
pentagon, hexagon and deltoid or (Students will check their answers.)
kite.

Who among you got the

7 shapes? (Students who got the 7 shapes will
raise their hands.)

Downloaded by Anthony Serrato (delosreyesanthony09@gmail.com)

Okay, very good Allyssa!
Very good Sheena!
Very good Niña
1,2 clap clap clap
Class, let us give them a winner 1,2 clap clap clap
clap. Winner!

And to those who did not get the

7 shapes, it is okay you are still
good for participating in our first
activity.
Good Job!

3. Analysis
Do you usually see this geometric (Students may answer yes or no.)
shapes in your surrounding?

Can you tell me some objects that (Students may tell different objects.)
we can compare from this
shapes?
(Students’ answer may vary.)
What do you call to all of this
shapes?

4. Abstraction
Based on the activity that we did,
what do you think is our lesson for
today? (Students’ answer may vary.)

Our lesson for today is about

polygons.

(Teacher will show a geometric

shapes and let the students
identify whether it is a polygon or
not.)

I have here another set of

geometric shapes, now I want you
to tell me whether the shape in
that number is a polygon or not. (Students will raise their hand to
answer.)
(Teacher will call the name of a
student.)

Downloaded by Anthony Serrato (delosreyesanthony09@gmail.com)

How can we determine if the figure (Students will raise their hand to
is a polygon? answer.)

Yes, Raniela Ma’am, we can say that it is a polygon

if it is a two-dimensional (2D) shape.

Great answer Raniela!

According to your classmate, we

can determine that a figure is a
polygon if it is a two-dimensional
shape. Aside from that, what else? (Students will raise their hand to
answer.)
Yes, Ella
Ma’am, we can determine that a figure
is a polygon if it has a straight sides.
Excellent answer Ella!

Polygon is a closed figure

formed by three or more
segments called sides.

Each side intersects exactly two

other sides, once at each
endpoint.

No two sides with a common

endpoint are collinear.

Each line segment is called the

side of the polygon and each
endpoint where the sides meet is
called the vertex of the polygon.

(The teacher will have a guessing

game wherein she will show some
objects and ask the students to
identify whether the object is (Students will raise their hand to
polygon or not.) answer and their answers may
vary.)
Some polygons have special
names. They are named
according to the number of sides
and angles that they form.

Let us have a quick recap about

the classification of polygons by
completing this table.

Very Good!

There are different types of

polygons, a regular polygon, a
polygon that has congruent sides
and interior angles. Irregular
polygon, does not have congruent
sides and interior angles.

Again class, what are the different

types of polygon?
Regular polygon
Irregular Polygon
Very Good class!
We will now have a group activity.
I will group you into three groups
and I want you to observe the (The students will answer the group
shapes that I will be showing on activity.)
the screen and after that answer
the following questions within 5
minutes.
-How many sides does the
figure has?
-What is the name of the
polygon?
-Does the side of the figure has
the same length?
-Does the angle of the figure
has an equal measure?
-Is this a regular or irregular
polygon?

5. Application
(The teacher will show different
road signs and the students will
identify the meaning and shape of
the sign.)

C. Generalization
Class can you give me some
examples of Polygons that can be
seen at home? (Students will raise their hands and will
cite some examples.)
Polygons are everywhere. Do you
believe in that? Yes teacher!

And do you know that it has an

important part of the education of
each one of you? Yes teacher!

Polygons are important as they teach

you how to make patterns and
tessellations, how to use polygons to
make other shapes, and build on
polygons to form 3D shapes and
symmetry.

I know you’ve learn a lot from this

days discussion, anyone who can
explain to me the meaning of
polygons and give its classification (Students will raise their hands to
and types? answer.)

(Teacher will call 2 students to

answer.)
