FACULTY OF ENGINEERING
Draw a well labelled diagram of a drilling machine and describe the function of each part
labelled.
A drilling machine is a type of machine in which the holes are being made on the
workpiece by making use of a rotating tool called drill bit or the twist drill.
1. Base:
The base is the main part of the machine on which the whole machine is being mounted. The
bed is made up of cast iron, so it has high compressive strength and good wear resistance.
2. Pillar:
The pillar is a type of vertical column that rests on the base. A pillar is present at the center of
the base. The pillar supports the motor, worktable and the spindle head.
3. Swivel Table/work table:
The table is the place where the workpiece is being mounted. The table is attached to the
column and it can be rotated around the column and can have an upward and downward
moment. A table can be adjusted at any angle as per the requirement.
4. Motor:
The motor is present at the top of the column. The inside motor shaft is there which is
connected to a stepped pulley so that we can increase or decrease the speed of the rotation of
the motor. It converts the electrical energy into motion.
5. Stepped pulley:
Two steeped pulleys are present on either side of the column at the top. Out of these two, one
pulley will be in an upward direction while the other pulley is inverted.
Always both the pulleys will be there in the opposite direction. The basic function of the
stepped pulley is to control the speed of the rotation of the motor.
6. Spindle:
Spindle arrangement is present at top of the column opposite to the arrangement of the motor.
The top of the spindle is attached to one of the stepped pulleys. The bottom of the spindle is
connected to the chuck. It is used to adjust the distance between the drill bit and the
worktable.
7. Chuck:
Chuck is present at the bottom of the spindle. The basic function of the chuck is to hold the
cutting tool firmly.
8. Drill bit:
Is an actual cutting tool that is used to create a hole in the workpiece.
A drilling machine is used to cut holes into or through metal, wood, or other materials.
Drilling machines use a drilling tool that has cutting edges at its point, this cutting tool is held
in the drill press by a chuck and is rooted and fed into the work at variable speeds.
Prior to the drilling operation, the operator must put on the appropriate personal protective
equipments for example, overall, safety shoes, eye protection.
The operator should then seek for permission from the workshop authority before carrying
the drilling operation.
The operator should then read through the standard operating procedures and ensure that they
have been understood. They should also ensure that they have adequate knowledge about the
machine before starting the operation.
The operator should then ensure that the safety guards are in place followed by trouble
shooting the machine to ensure that the cutting tools are running straight before starting the
operation to ensure that it is in a good condition.
The operator should also ensure the availability of all the necessary workpiece or material to
be used.
The process of drilling is then started by making two cross lines on the cleaned work piece
using a scriber to determine the center or area of focus for the drilling process. The metal is
then subjected to the rotating edge of the cutting tool called the drill pressed to meet the hole
at the work piece. Lubricate the drill bit when drilling the metal. Never leave the machine in
the middle of the operation. After drilling, shut off power before removing the drill bit.
To obtain the accuracy of the drilled hole, reaming is carried out. Here, the speed of the
spindle is adjusted to half of that of the drilling process. The tool used is a reamer.
After the reaming process, the machine is then switched off using the isolator switch. The
work piece is then removed. The workplace is cleaned using a brush to remove the chips.
The working surface should be kept clean of scraps, tools and materials and the floor around
the drill press should be kept free of oil and grease.
c) Identify any ten major causes of accidents while working on a drilling machine.
Defective equipment; drills not made to specifications cause accidents.
Lack of training for workers
Improper maintenance of equipment
Unsafe working conditions
Fatigue
Lack of protective gear
Electrocution due to naked wires
Worker negligence
Failure to implement or follow proper workplace safety procedures.
Failure to follow the standard operating procedures as given by the
manufacturer.
