PRODUCT AUTHORIZATION
Before developing projects in Proficy Process Systems, you must authorize the
software. If not, you have unrestricted use of the software’s features for only a short
trial period. The authorization process takes only a few moments and enables you
to take advantage of any product support for which you qualify.
To see the products you are currently authorized for, on the Proficy Process
Systems Help menu, point to Product Authorization and choose Authorize
Software. The Product Authorization dialog appears. If you have a hardware key in
a USB port, select Show Hardware Keys to view the authorizations provided by
that key.

1. Locate a free USB port on your computer.
The USB port is often located on the front or back of your tower case, or in the side
of a laptop computer. Sometimes a USB port is on your computer’s monitor.
2. Plug the hardware key into the USB port.
The first time you plug the key into a USB port, a progress dialog appears,
indicating that Windows is updating its system settings with the new hardware.
After the dialog disappears, the settings stored in the hardware key are active. You
can use the authorized Proficy Process Systems products.
Leave the hardware key in the port while using Proficy Process Systems. If you
remove the key, authorization for those products vanishes.
To move authorization to another computer, remove the hardware key from the
source computer and plug it into a USB port on the destination computer.

Projects
Before creating a Logic Developer project, consider:
The primary components your project will contain.
The GE IP Controller your project will run on.
With Logic Developer, you can build multiple projects for your requirements.
Want to know more? See the Projects section in the Proficy Logic Developer: Getting Started
manual (GFK-2485N) or, in the Engineering Workstation online help index, look up “projects”
and choose “Projects: an Overview”.
Tools
Project development is supported by various tools, each of which is opened with a
button on the Tools toolbar.
Tool descriptions:
Navigator: A docking tool window with a set of tabs displaying information about
your development system in a hierarchical tree structure, similar to Windows
Explorer.
Feedback Zone: A docking window displays several types of output information
generated by Logic Developer.
Inspector: Lists properties and current settings for a selected object or element.
Data Watch: A run-time debugging tool to monitor and edit variable values.
Toolchest: A powerful storehouse of objects you can add to your project. You can
drag most items directly from the Toolchest into Logic Developer editors.
Companion: Provides useful tips and information while you work.
InfoViewer: An embedded Web browser that displays online help, reports, and
documentation associated with a project or target.
Want to know more? See the Tools section in the Proficy Logic Developer: Getting Started
manual (GFK-2485N) or, in the Engineering Workstation online help index, look up “tools” and
choose “Tools Toolbar”.
Variables
The Variables tab of the Navigator contains variables. A variable is a named data
storage space. A variable name represents a memory location in the target
Controller with the variable’s Ref Address property value.
Want to know more? See the Variables section in the Proficy Logic Developer: Getting Started
manual (GFK-2485N) or, in the Engineering Workstation online help index, look up “variables”
and choose “Variables: an Overview”.
Options
The Options tab of the Navigator contains option and preference settings. Options
are organized into folders and pages.
Want to know more? See the Options section in the Proficy Logic Developer: Getting Started
manual (GFK-2485N) or, in the Engineering Workstation online help index, look up “options”
and choose “Options tab (Navigator)”.
Targets
A target represents a run-time destination of the program(s) developed with Logic
Developer. Each target contains all components for that target. Proficy Process
Systems Logic Developer supports the following GE families of Controllers:
PACSystems RX7i
PACSystems RX3i
A target is present in a project when you use a template to create the project. A
project can contain multiple targets.
One target is required for each Controller in your project, except with CPU
redundancy. In this case, one target contains a Primary Hardware Configuration
and a Secondary Hardware Configuration, which correspond to the primary
Controller and secondary Controller.
Want to know more? See the Targets section in the Proficy Logic Developer: Getting Started
manual (GFK-2485N) or, in the Engineering Workstation online help index, look up “targets”
and choose “Targets: an Overview”.
Communications with a PACSystems is required for storing and loading programs
or monitoring data values and Controller Status. Connect to a Controller from
Logic Developer over a serial, Ethernet, or modem connection, depending on the
Controller’s capabilities.
Target Controller:
Validates your targets
Works offline or online with a Controller.

CIMPLICITY*
Windows-based HMI/SCADA component of GE's family of software automation
products
Scalable from a Human Machine Interface (HMI) to a fully networked
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system
The networking capabilities achieves integration levels that virtually eliminate
redundant configuration in a network.
Based on a client–server architecture with Servers and Viewers.
Flexibility to build a larger system with multiple smaller nodes without having
to purchase expensive server hardware.
Servers
Collect, distribute data
Licensed to collect data from 75, 150, 300, 700, 1500 or unlimited number of
device points. Exempted from the point count are:
Virtual points: they reside only in the computer
Points collected by another server. This I/O count architecture satisfies
customers with small single node systems, and leverages CIMPLICITY's
strong client-server architecture for multi-node systems.
Viewers
Connect to Servers
Full access to collected data to view and control actions
Servers, Viewers
Servers and Viewers are easily networked together to seamlessly share data
without replicating your point database from node to node. For example, points
are configured on a server only once. Screens are developed and stored in one
location on the network and accessed by any other CIMPLICITY display on the
network.
For detailed information, see CIMPLICITY online help.
Distributed Control
The following diagram demonstrates how EGD works. There are four devices in the
Ethernet Global Data exchange: two PACSystems Controllers, a computer running
Engineering Workstation, and an operator console with iFIX.
Controller A produces Exchanges 1 and 2 and consumes none. Controller A’s logic
triggers an event to generate a Command message to Controller B.
Controller B produces Exchange 3 and consumes Exchange 2.
The computer produces no exchanges and consumes Exchanges 1 through 3.
Exchange 1 is unicast. Exchange 2 multicast, where a single produced exchange is
subscribed to by more than one consumer.
iFIX on an operator console updates to the Configuration Server on the computer.
The configuration of each device is available in the Configuration Server on the
computer (can be located on any computer on the network). The EGD
Management tool generates EGD status and communication statistics.
Note: Proficy Process Systems supports redundant supervisory networks and Run
Mode Store (RMS). Redundant supervisory networks enable a redundancy
connection between operator console(s) and Logic Developer. RMS automatically
synchronizes all EGD exchanges in the EGD Configuration Server.
Want to know more? In the EGD Management Edition OPC Server online help, search for
“Supporting Redundant Supervisory Networks for Proficy Process Systems”. In the Engineering
Workstation online help index, look up “Run Mode Store (RMS)”.

HISTORIAN SERVER
The Historian Server is the central point for managing all client and collector
interfaces, storing and (optionally) compressing data and retrieving data. Tag data
(numbers, strings, BLOBs) is stored in a proprietary format in the archive database.
The archive database consists of several files; each file represents a specific time
period of historical data.
If licensed for the Alarm and Event option, then the Historian Server also manages
the storage and retrieval of OPC alarms and events in an SQL Server or MSDE
database.
Want to know more? See the Historian Server section in the Proficy Historian: Getting Started
manual.
COLLECTORS
Historian includes several types of data collectors for collecting data from a variety
of applications, such as iFIX 2.6 and greater, FIX 6.5 and greater, CIMPLICITY 5.5
and greater, OPC 1.0 or 2.0, OPC Alarms & Events, files (csv or xml), and OSI PI.
The Calculation collector performs math and analysis on Historian data and stores
the results on the server. The Server-to-Server collector has the same calculation
capabilities as the Calculation collector, storing the results on a remote server.
Want to know more? See the Historian Data Collectors and Historian File Collector sections
in the Proficy Historian: Getting Started manual or, in the Proficy Historian online help, look up
the “Historian Data Collectors” chapter in the Table of Contents.
CLIENTS
Client applications retrieve archived data through the Historian API. The Historian
API is a client/server programming interface that maintains connectivity to the
Historian Server and provides functions for data storage and retrieval in a
distributed network environment.
Want to know more? In the Proficy Historian online help, look up the “Guidelines for
Working with Clients” chapter in the Table of Contents.
EXCEL ADD-IN
The Historian Excel add-in is a useful tool for presenting and analyzing data stored
in archive files. It enables you to design custom reports of selected data,
automatically process the information, and analyze results. You can also perform
tag maintenance functions in Historian, such as adding tags, importing or
exporting tags, or editing tag parameters.
Want to know more? See the Excel add-in section in the Proficy Historian: Getting Started
manual or, in the Proficy Historian online help, look up the “Using the Historian Excel add-in”
chapter in the Table of Contents.
HISTORIAN SDK
The Software Development Kit (SDK) enables you to write Visual Basic (VB) or
Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) scripts. You can create scripts to perform
selected repetitive or complex tasks or to create a custom user interface. To use the
SDK, create a VB/VBA project with the SDK as a project reference.
Want to know more? See the Historian SDK section in the Proficy Historian: Getting Started
manual or see the Historian SDK online help.
EQUIPMENT EDITOR
The Equipment Editor is a graphical tool for configuring and maintaining area
models. In an area model, you define equipment entities, such as:
Area
Process Cells
Units
Equipment Phases
Control Modules
The Equipment Editor is integrated with the Proficy Batch WorkSpace application,
providing a central location for all your development needs.
Want to know more? See the Batch Execution and the ISA S88.01 Models section in the

selecting its tools, making recipe development quick and easy.
The Recipe Editor complies with the ISA-S88.01 (SP88) Batch Control standard and
supports industry-standard International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 1131-3
symbols and sequential function charts (SFC). These standards enable created
recipes to be easily understood by process engineers.
Want to know more? See the Developing Recipes section in the Application Guide or, in the
Batch Execution online help, look up “Recipe Development Manual” in the Table of Contents.
OPC SPECIFICATION
Based on the Microsoft® OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) technology, OPC
(OLE for Process Control) provides greater interoperability between control
applications, field systems and devices, and from office/backoffice applications.
OPC servers, such as DCSs, Controllers, smart field devices, and analyzers,
provide real-time information and can communicate directly with Batch Server.
For detailed information about Batch Server, see the Application Guide and the
Batch Execution online help.
Want to know more? See the OPC Specification section in the Application Guide or, in the
Batch Execution online help, look up “OPC Specification”.
WATCHDOG CONFIGURATION
The watchdog is a variable in the WDOG instance data on the process Controller.
Configure one watchdog per process Controller. Proficy Process Systems and Batch
Execution applications read this variable to ensure that the process Controller is
available for data requests.
To enable both Proficy Process Systems and Batch Execution to read the watchdog
variable in the Controller, configure the watchdog in both applications. The value
of the time-out interval and maximum number of consecutive failures for the
watchdog must be the same in both applications.
Want to know more? In the Batch Execution online help, look up “Understanding Watchdog
Communication”.
