Lesson 3.5 Factor by Grouping
Homework: p. 234 #6 and Worksheet
By the end of this lesson…
I will be able to factor by grouping.

Steps to Factor a Polynomial by Grouping:

1. Find the GCF of the polynomial.
2. Remove the GCF of the polynomial as the first factor, and then divide each term
by the GCF of the polynomial.
3. Group terms with a common factor.
4. Factor the GCF from each grouping.
5. Then, remove the binomial common factor.

Examples: Factor each polynomial by grouping.

a. 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑎𝑦 + 2𝑥 + 2𝑦 b. 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 1

c. 9𝑥 + 15𝑥 − 3𝑥 − 5 d. 4𝑥𝑦𝑧 + 4𝑥𝑦𝑞 + 2𝑧 + 2𝑞

e. 16𝑣 − 12𝑣 − 12𝑣 + 9 f. 𝑎𝑦 + 3𝑎𝑦 + 4𝑦 + 12
