2.2 Proper use

The Ultrasonic Screening Resonator is used exclusively for ultrasonic-assisted

screening of suitable materials. The system must only be operated on generators
of type SG46 built by TELSONIC AG.
Any use beyond this scope or any other use is deemed improper use. The manu-
facturer cannot be held liable for any damage resulting from this. In this case the
risk is borne solely by the user.
The installation must not be operated unless it is in perfect working order;
it must be used for the proper, intended purpose, with full awareness of safety
issues and potential hazards, and in compliance with the operating manual.

2.3 Special instructions

These operating instructions must be carefully read before the system is taken
into operation. Lack of knowledge about operation and maintenance could cause
damage to the unit.
The operating manual should always be kept ready to hand at the place where
the installation is used. Additional copies can be ordered at any time from your
supplier.
No items such as spirals, deflectors etc. must be attached to the resonator or in
its immediate vicinity (50 mm separation).
The screening mesh can become contaminated by oil or other residues. It should
therefore be cleaned in order to ensure that the effectiveness of the ultrasound is
not impaired.

2.4 Safety precautions

• Do not drop any heavy objects onto the screening surface that could dam-
age the screening fabric or the resonator.
• The ultrasonic system must not be taken into operation if:
a) the screening resonator has been exposed to abnormal mechanical
effects, for example as a result of being dropped or knocked hard
(mechanical damage)
b) a fault is displayed on the generator
The manufacturer rejects all liability for any damage which arises as a result of
failure to install safety devices which are recommended by the manufacturer for
safe operation, and which could have been avoided if said safety devices had
been installed.

2.5 Selection of operating personnel

Screening work with the screening resonator must only be carried out by well
instructed personnel.
All personnel must be trained or instructed.

2.7 Noise emissions

Ultrasonic screening machines can generally
cause excessive sound pressure levels. In such
cases the operator and persons in the vicinity
of the unit must wear ear protection during its
operation.
CAUTION The main noise is caused by low-frequency
oscillations of the screening machine.

2.8 Modifications to the resonator

The system, and the resonator in particular, works like a tuning fork.
Modifications will detune the system. The term "modifications" includes e.g.
grinding or welding work performed on the resonator. This can lead to overheat-
ing and even fractures or breakages.
Modifications, additions or conversions which might affect safety are strictly for-
bidden without the permission of the manufacturer. No modifications or welding
work may be performed on the resonator.

2.9 Repairs

Repairs must not be carried out by operator. Please send defective compo-
nents along with a description of the fault to your sales office or directly to the
manufacturer.
Repairs to the screening fabric are permitted as long as the point which needs to
be glued is at least 50mm away from the resonator.
Repairs to the HF plug are permitted as long as they are carried out in accord-
ance with the manufacturer's specifications.

and an acoustically matched resonator (2), which is permanently welded via the
decoupling rods (3) to a steel or stainless steel frame (4).
The electric wiring, which is protected in a steel tube or steel fabric hose, goes
from the converter (1) to the plug housing (6). The electric feed from the screen-
ing resonator to the generator is provided via a shielded HF-cable (7).
The converter can either be permanently welded or screwed to the resonator.
The permanently welded version carries the designation SR3602, while the
screwed version is SRS3602. A converter SK3602 is required for operation of the
screwed version.

3.3 Ambient conditions for the resonator

Factory settings for the screening resonator are made at 21°C.

Relative humidity 20% – 80%
Operating temperature -20°C – 60°C
70°C for intermittent modes
Maximum product temperature 60°C

Higher temperatures are only permitted upon re-

NOTE quest and/or after clarification with TELSONIC AG.

3.4 Important information about assembly

• The converter and resonator are acoustically matched components.

Consequently, they must not be changed or damaged in any way.
• With the version SRS3602, the converter (SK3602) can be separated from
the resonator with an open-ended spanner (size 36). With the version
SR3602 the converter cannot be separated from the resonator.
• Before the resonator and converter are screwed together, the threads and
the contact surfaces must not be damaged or contaminated with dust or
liquid. If the threads and contact surfaces are not free of powder residue
when they are screwed together, there is a risk of the threads being
damaged. Damaged or under-tightened threads will lead to a build-up of
heat at the disconnecting point and - in the worst case scenario - cause the
destruction of the converter or resonator.

The tightening torque is: Min. 40 Nm

3.5 HF-connection

There are two basic variants for the electrical connection, "A" and "F". Depending
on the screening machine and resonator type, the connection runs through the
screening frame (type A) or below the fabric frame through the screening ma-
chine wall (type F).

3.5.1 Connecting the HF-cable

Once it has been properly plugged in, the HF-connection is protected against
dust and spray water (IP65). The converter and HF-cable are fitted with protec-
tive caps which satisfy the requirements for protection rating IP65. The protective
caps must be fitted during installation and removal of the screening insert in order
to prevent dust from penetrating into the plug.

3.6 Assembly of the screening insert into the machine

To prevent differences in potential (electrostatic

charges) between the screening fabric and
screening machine, the screening frame should
be electrically connected to the screening ma-
chine. The recommended minimum cable cross-
section for this is 4 mm2 (Cu).
CAUTION The screening fabric must be included in the equi-
potential bonding.

When replacing the screening insert, make sure

that the protective cover is attached to the HF-
CAUTION cable(s) and to the converter. Otherwise there is a
risk that they will become dirty.

3.7 Converter cooling

If the temperature of the material which is to be screened exceeds 60°C, we

recommend using the converter model with cooling. This will increase the service
life of the components.

4. APPLICATION OF FABRIC

For professional re-application of fabric or application of new fabric, please con-

tact your screening machine manufacturer or dealer.

5. ADJUSTMENTS ON THE SCREENING MACHINE

For the best possible adjustment of your screening machine, please contact your
screening machine manufacturer or dealer.

During ultrasonic-assisted screening, care must be taken to ensure that the

thickness of the layer of material for screening on the screening fabric pref-
erably does not exceed 8 mm.
Excessive amounts of material for screening on the fabric will result in strong at-
tenuation and thus reduce the ultrasonic effect.
Similarly, too much powder with densities > 2 t/m³ can deform the system or lead
to premature screen and resonator cracks. The material being screened must
always be applied evenly.
Higher product densities will result in higher loads. According to our experience,
a machine acceleration of 5 g is possible up to a bulk density of 1 t/m³. For bulk
densities > 3 t/m³ the machine acceleration must not exceed 3 g.
As well as the product feed and the machine adjustments, the following factors
are important for the screening results:
• Generator adjustment: Ultrasonic intensity (20 – 100%)
• Generator operating mode: Continuous or pulsating sound

6. MAINTENANCE

SONOSCREEN plus does not require any technical maintenance. In the event of
repairs, the screening insert should be sent to the nearest TELSONIC office.
SONOSCREEN plus can not always prevent the screening fabric from clogging.
The screening fabric should, therefore, be cleaned on a regular basis. The inter-
vals should be judged by the operator according to experience.

6.1 Periodic checks

For the purpose of preventative maintenance, we recommend a general inspec-

tion of all components of the screening unit every 6 months or according to the
experience of the operator.
In particular, the resonator and decoupling rods should be checked for wear,
cracks and damage.
Regular visual inspection of the HF-connecting cables, HF-plugs and the screen-
ing insert will preserve the performance and efficiency of the ultrasonic system.
Special attention should be paid to the HF-plugs. If a lot of dust collects on them,
clean the plugs and covers with oil-free compressed air.

The periodic checks include examining all con-

necting cables. The corresponding parts should
CAUTION
be replaced immediately if any damage to cables
or wear to plug contacts is discovered.

6.2 Cleaning

Proceed as follows to clean the screening insert:

1. Switch off the generator.
2. Disconnect the plug connections between the generator and the screening
insert and seal the plug on the HF-connection with the protective cap.
3. Unscrew the converter from the screening resonator.
4. Clean the resonator and screening fabric with soapy water and a sponge.
For more efficient cleaning, it is possible to use an ultrasonic bath for this
purpose.
5. Dry the screening resonator and fabric with compressed air and connect them
again to the generator. Maintain a distance of between 10 – 20 cm between
the compressed air gun and the screening fabric to prevent any damage to
the fabric.
Avoid any damage when using a high-pressure cleaner or compressed air; it is
better to use a soft brush!

1. INSTRUCTIONS

Depending on design, the device can be used for categories 1D; 2D, 3D , 2G and
3G. The category is shown on the type plate.
The device is part of a system consisting of the following components: screening
resonator (usually welded to the screening frame), convertor (fixed or screwed),
ATEX HF-cable and generator.
The system, and the resonator in particular, works like a tuning fork.
Modifications may detune the system and can lead to overheating and fractures or
breakages.
No mechanical or thermal procedures such as welding, grinding, drilling etc. should
be performed on the resonator or decouplers.
Items such as spirals, deflectors etc. (exceptions: see section 4) must never be at-
tached to the resonator or in its immediate vicinity.
Only genuine parts supplied by TELSONIC AG should be installed. Otherwise the
approval will become void. Original fabrics have a stamp on the sticker.
When used in ATEX areas, the first fabric must be applied by the manufacturer,
TELSONIC AG, because it has to be individually tested. Subsequent fabric applica-
tions should only be carried out by companies who have successfully completed an
ATEX fabric application course at TELSONIC AG. The fabric application should only
be carried out by specially trained personnel who hold a qualification certificate.
Systems with a screening surface > 1,500 cm² and a screening diameter ≥ 600 mm
can be operated at a maximum of 150 W and with an intensity of 100%.
The screening insert should be connected to the earthing system of the screening
machine and must be connected to same potential using at least 4 mm² Cu cable.
The screening machine should be operated at a maximum of 3 g for the resonator
SR(S)36-* and a maximum of 5 g for the SR(S)3602. Please make sure it is oper-
ating correctly by checking, among other things, that the springs of the screening
machine are working correctly.
The zone separation must be observed during installation and operation.
This is usually done by the user at the screening frame. There must be no zone
overlap from the inside outwards or vice versa. The screening machine and the
equipment around the screening frame must be designed to act as separating walls.
This means that seals/gaskets and the sealing system must be correspondingly
dustproof or gas-tight.
Plastic fabrics are prohibited in potentially explosive areas in conjunction with ultra-
sound. Conductive plastic fabrics are permitted.
Silicone or other adhesive joints which increase screening life are only allowed on
the screening frame. These joints are not permitted to be present on the resonator
due to the increased heat which is generated.
Converter cooling is not permitted in the ATEX area.
The resonators and the decouplers in particular should be inspected at regular
intervals for cracks and damage (the timing of the intervals should be judged by the
operator according to experience). Damaged resonators must be taken out of oper-
ation immediately. Potential repair work must only be undertaken by TELSONIC AG.
During installation of the resonators, make sure that the contact faces for the
screening frame are level. Otherwise, the resonator could become warped or be
subjected to additional stresses. The additional stresses could lead to cracks and
hence cause a build-up of heat on the resonators.

The electrical connection of the resonator is supplied with an ATEX compliant

metal connector plug for the Dust-Ex area. The connection is lockable and can
only be opened with tools.
Please note that the plug and socket must be completely dry and dust-free
before connecting up. It is beneficial to use a vacuum cleaner if this is permitted.
Oil-free compressed air may also be used for cleaning. All protective caps must
be mounted.
There are two types of connection, "A" and "F". Depending on the screening
machine type, the connection runs through the screening frame (version "A") or
below the fabric frame and through the screening machine wall (version "F"). Re-
pairs must only be performed with genuine replacement parts. The requirements

4. Further information about design variants

4.1 Sealing the converter gap with adhesive

If the converter gap needs to be effused (this is a gap which is required for
acoustic reasons), please use an elastic compound like Sika 2097 2C + 7020.
There must not be any covering of the converter surface which could lead to a
build-up of heat.

4.2 Cleaning ring around the converter

The rings must only be replaced by genuine or identical rings.

4.3 Rings for placing on the screening fabric

In the case of flat rings, check the screening fabric and glue points on the reso-
nator and, if necessary, decouplers, at regular intervals. The inspection intervals
should be judged according to the operator's experience. Start by checking on a
daily basis if no other empirical data are available.
The following screening aids can be optionally used within the limitations de-
scribed below:

4.4 Cable holder for flexible HF-cable

The cable should be checked regularly for any damage at the feed-through and
in the area around the holder.

4.5 Systems screwed into the screening frame

Make sure that the resonator is earthed and connected to the earthing of the
screening machine or the installation. If necessary, perform and document
measurements.

4.6 Glued-on or soldered deflectors / spirals etc.

If additional metal deflectors are soldered or glued to the edge of the screening
device (outside the resonator), ensure that:
• the distance to the edge of the resonator is at least 50 mm;
• a build-up of electrostatic charge is inhibited on plastic deflectors;
• glued metal deflectors are electrically connected to the screening fabric.
When using the generators SG-40, SG-42, SG-45 and SG46 with adapter box in
continuous ultrasonic modes, a distance to the resonator of 50 mm must be satis-
fied. Connected screening fabrics are checked prior to delivery in individual tests.
When using the SG46 in the modes HLN or HRD with pdu < 40%, you can apply
the adhesive up to or over the resonator. The area covering the resonator must
be < 10 cm².

5. Maximum surface temperatures

The maximum surface temperatures at the converter and resonator depend on

the generator which is used and the job settings. The greatest build-up of heat
will occur in the continuous ultrasonic modes (resonance, amplitude modulation,
frequency modulation). At ambient temperatures between 60 and 70°C, only
intermitted modes (pulse, HLN, HRD) may be used.
Please check on your product the maximum occurring surface temperatures
depending on the selected generator settings!
The following maximum surface temperatures apply for the screening resonator
SR(S)3602*-*** with screening converter SK3602* or the resonator and SR(S)-
36*-*** with converter SK-36* and adapter box, for operation with
SG46 ATEX:

6. Generator options

The generator SG46 ATEX is approved for Dust-Ex. The generator SG46 ATEX
can be set up in the zones 21 or 22.
The generator SG46 ATEX is approved for screening dimensions from 1500 cm2
or for a screening diameter > 600 mm respectively. For screening diameters <
600 mm the generator SG46 ATEX must have an output limitation of 80 W. The
output of your device can be seen on the type plate.
Please have the system output reduced accordingly by the suppliers of the over-
all system or by the manufacturer of the generator.
