SBIRT Simulation Lab-Spring-2023

Welcome to SBIRT

The SBIRT program at the University of South Carolina (USC), College of Social Work
(CofSW) aims to customize, implement, and evaluate a SBIRT training program that
teaches social work students the skills necessary to provide evidence-based screening,
brief intervention, and referrals to treatment for patients who are at risk for a substance
use disorder. Dr. Reitmeier is the SBIRT team facilitator for the social work students.
Students will complete an online asynchronous training which will educate students on
an evidence-based intervention called Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to
Treatment (SBIRT). The purpose of this simulation lab is to give you feedback about
your basic engagement, assessment, intervention and evaluation skills (CSWE
Competencies E 2.1.7-10) and identify ways you can improve basic practice skills, as
this is all about learning how to have a difficult yet compassionate conversation with a
client about substance use. We know it may make you nervous, but students report it as
one of the best learning opportunities they’ve had after they complete the demonstration.
I encourage you to use a strengths-based perspective in approaching, engaging yet
ultimately choosing to complete this lab and demonstration which is showing you can
engage compassionately in a conversation with a client who misuses alcohol and/or
drugs. You will also be tested on understadningthe content of the lab.
Students will be required to first complete pretests before proceeding to the content of
the SBIRT modules and then posttests. These modules which are no longer than 5-6
hours total, as you are expected to review videos and practice for the remaining hours.
Once the pretests are completed, the time-released modules will appear in the
blackboard site you will be added, so you can complete the training modules. Once
content and practice of how to engage in a Brief Negotiated Interview are felt to be
mastered, students are required to engage in a live demonstration in class through Dr.
Reitmeier's Leadership These live demonstrations will be evaluated by your peers
