INTRODUCTION

Traffic Volume Survey is a survey carried out in order to know the quantity of vehicles that

passed through a particular road at a particular period of time. It is carried out to provide

information about how a road or highway is being used, and they can be used to identify

areas of congestions or areas that need improvement. To conduct a traffic volume survey,

traffic counters are placed on a road or highway to count the number of vehicles that pass by.

The counters can be mechanical or electronic, and they may count individual vehicles or the

number of axels on each vehicle. After the traffic counters have been in place for a long

period of time, the data is collected and analyzed. It can also be done manually using

software programs. Once the analysis is complete, a report is created that includes the

average daily traffic, the peak hours of traffic, and the vehicle classifications. This

information can be used to identify areas that need improvements such as adding lanes or

changing speed limits. It can also be used to plan for future growth in a community. By

estimating how much traffic will increase in the future.

Importance of Traffic Volume Survey

i. To identify areas of congestions or areas that needs improvement.

ii. To understand traffic patterns so that new roads or improvements can be planned

iii. To develop traffic safety plan.

iv. To forecast future traffic volume, to plan for future growth

v. To monitor the effectiveness of traffic management strategies

vi. To provide data for transportation modeling

vii. Traffic Volume Survey is used for determining the capacity of a road or

intersection.

viii. Estimate the number of vehicle that will use a new road.
LITERATURE REVIEW

Traffic volume survey dates back to the early 1900s, when transportation planners and

engineers began to use them to help plan new roads and highways. At the time, traffic volume

was estimated by counting the number of vehicles that passed by a certain point on a road or

highway during a certain period of time. This method was quite crude, but it was the best

available at the time. As technology improved, the methods for conducting traffic volume

surveys also improved. In the 1950s, electronic traffic counters were developed which

allowed for more accurate counts and reduced the need for manual counting.

Definition of Terms

i. Volume: This also means flow, it is the number of vehicles that can be found

within the range of a given length.

ii. Average Daily Traffic (ADT): Average daily traffic or ADT, and sometimes also

mean Daily Traffic, is the average number of vehicles two way passing a specified

point in a 24-hour period, normally measured throughout a year.

iii. Rate of Flow: This is the rate at which the volume of a road increases and

decreases with time.

iv. Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT): It is the rate of total yearly volume to

the number of days in a year expressed in vpd (volume per day)

v. Average Weekly Traffic (AWT): Average 24-hour traffic volume occurring on

weekdays for some period less than one year.

vi. Hourly Expansion Factor (HEF): Total 24hours volume/volume for particular

hour Daily expansion Factor (DEF): Avg total weekly volume/avg vol for

particular day Monthly expansion Factor (MEF):AADT/ADT for particular month

METHODOLOGY

There are two methods of carrying out Traffic volume Survey, they are Automatic and

Manual counting method.

Automatic Method involves the use of an automated system to record data of vehicles, this

method is simple and more accurate, moreover it is not common because it is not easy to set

up and it requires more capital. Manual Method can be done instead of Automatic method,

Man manually collects these data using simple equipments such as stopwatch and counter.

Method we have selected

For the course of this practical, the Manual Counting Method is selected.

Weather Condition: Throughout the survey, the weather condition was clear and there is no

record of storm and rainfall.

Location of Survey: This survey was carried out at the Ogberin Rd, Ede, Osun State.

Survey Procedure

i. Reconnaissance: First visitation to the route site, to get familiar with the features

around the field, and also to make necessary awareness.

ii. Trial Survey: A trial was first recorded to ensure the efficiency of our

equipments.

iii. Main Survey: Then, we carried out the survey and make necessary records of

data.

iv. Post Survey: Data analysis, Data exploration, Data presentation are the processes

that ends the survey procedure.

DATA ANALYSIS:

In lieu to the data that was collated and constructed, the result shows that there is low volume

of Heavy trucks and very high volume of Motorcycles, obviously, it is not a path for heavy

trucks, due to the presence of higher institution students in the area, there is more tendency to

come across ten motorcycles before coming across a Heavy truck

RECCOMMENDATION:

It is highly recommended that there should be a rehabilitation of the road because there are

potholes, and bad contours that affect the volume of traffic due to unnecessary delay of

vehicles and motorcycles. Also there should be a pedestrian way due to the number of

pedestrians that makes use of the road.
