3.5 Materials shall be prepared for use in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.

3.6 Miscellaneous or small size items shall be painted in accordance with the manufacturer's standard.

3.7 During the sequential paintings, especially at the time of on‐site painting after shop paintings, each
painting shall be carried out after adequate surface treatment through consultation with the paint
supplier if the period between the sequance elapses beyond than specified by the supplier.

4. Surface Prepation

4.1 Blast cleaning shall not be conducted when the temperature of the surface is less than 3 oC above
dew point of the surrounding air, or when the relative humidity of the air is grater than 85%.
But if manufacturer's data sheet requires more stringent value, they shall be observed.

5. Application

5.1 All surface which have been blast cleaned shall be coated within 4 hours and before rust bloom occurs.

5.2 Painting shall be applied by means of brushing, rolling or spraying. But prime coats must not be applied
by rollers. For the applications of zinc sillicate prime coats, brushes shall not be used

5.2.1 Spray Application

Hoses, paint containers ,and spray guns shall be thoroughly cleaned prior to the addition of new materials
The spray guns shall always be held at right angles to the surface . Not closer than 200mm and not futher
than 600mm from the surface. Each pass shall overlap the previous pass and are surfaces shall always
have passes in two directions at right angels to each other.Equipment shall be adjusted until the optimum
spray pattern is achieved.
Before spraying each coat, all corners, weld, edges, small brackets, bolts, nuts and interstices shall be pre‐
coated by brush to ensure that in these areas the minimum DFT is achieved.
Each coat is to be applied uniformly over the entire surface.Runs and sags shall be brushed out
immediately or the paint shall be removed and the surface resprayed.

5.2.2 Brush Application

Brush application may only be used if the area cannot be sprayed adequately. For intial stripe coats
PAINT MANUFACTURE's instructions, enviromental restrictions, DFT requirement or touch up of
damage areas.
All brushes shall be of good quality to enable the proper application of the paint.
Paint shall be brushed on in a smooth even coat, deep brush marks should be avoided, all runs and
sags are to be immediately brushes out, paint shall be properly worked into all corners and crevices.

5.2.3 Roller Application

Roller application shall only be used if spraying is not posible and then only if the priming coat was
applied with a brush and in accordance with the PAINT MANUFACTURES's instructions

5.3 Painting shall be carefully done in such a way as specified by the paint manufacture's and as to give
a coating free from lifting, loss of adhesion, discoloration and finished to uniform paint film thickness.

5.4 Painting shall be carefully performed at all edges, corners, crevices, rivets, bolts, and nuts, weld and
other complex shapers where those parts are sensitive to get rust.

Doc. No. : PJA‐WP‐002 PAINTING PROCEDURE Date : 25 January 2016

5.5 On sharp edges, blots, or where crevice occurs, a patch or strip coat of primer shall be applied
by brushing at first.

5.6 Before the application of each coat of paint, the previous coat of paint shall be allowed to fully cure
in line with the time and temperature conditions givens by the paint manufacturer.

5.7 Each coat of paint shall be a different colours/ shade from the previous one to facilitate correct paint
application and DFT measurement

5.8 The paint shall be applied in an even, continuous film, particular attention shall be paid to the edges
weld and corners and areas of difficult geometry in order that the specified dry film thickness is
achieved in these areas

5.9 Inaccessible areas shall be fully painted prior to assembly

5.10 For areas where paint application may result in thin coatings, extra coat of paint shal be normally applied
by firstly painting stripe coats

5.11 Over Spray of zinc rich primers onto austentic, duplex and nickel alloy steel shall be avoided

5.12 Application of paint system shall be in accordance with paint manufactures requirements for
environmental conditions and methods of application.

5.13 Adequate ventilation shall be provided during the application and curing of the paint, especially
if this is carried out in enclosed conditions

5.14 The handling and transportation of painted items shall not be carried out until the paint has full cured.
Damage to the paint system during handling shall be avoided as much as possible and all appropriate
measures to avoid damage shall be taken, such as the use of non ‐ metalic slings, etc

5.15 Shop painting of presure equipment and piping shall be perform after completion off all
shop heat treatment, testing, and examination

5.16 Repair painting procedure for damaged area is as follows

5.16.1 This repair procedure covers the repair methods for the minor damaged surfaces caused by burns,
weld scratches, impact etc after fabrication or during fabrication, handling, storage, shipping
erection, etc

shall be comformed to para 2.3.4 of this painting procedure or the paint manufacturer's recommendation

5.16.3 Damages surfaces not more than 0.25m (2.69 ft2) in repairing shall be spot cleaned using power tools
( abrasive wheels, needle gun or equivalent) power tool cleaning (SSPC‐SP‐3) damages surfaces more
than 0,25m(2.69 ft2) shall be spot cleaned using portable blasting machine, (vacum‐Blast)
Measure the profile touch‐up or repair shall be done with brush or spray units in accordance with
the paint manufactures recommendation.

paint manufactures recomondation.

5.16.5 The same primer as that applied in the shop or a compatible primer with the same resistance and
temperature limits shall be used for re‐priming or priming unprimed areas.
Feather the existing paint to expose a minimum of 13mm of each coat, 25mm minimum for finish coat.

5.16.6 The same coat as that applied in the shop or a compatible coat with the same resistance and
temperature limits shall be used for touch up areas.

5.16.7 During the reapplication of the paint as follows :

‐ Apply the prime coat only to the surface of the bare steel and the existing prime coat exposed by
feathering. Do not apply the prime coat to the adjacent intermediate coat.

‐ Apply the intermediate coat only to the new prime coat and the existing intermediate coat expose
by feathering.Do not apply the intermediate coat to the adjacent finish coat.

‐ Apply the finish coat only to the new intermediate coat and the existing finish coat that was
feathered or lightly sanded nothing that to ensure a colour match it may be necessary to
extended the finish coat over a greather area. Do not apply the finish coat beyond areas that
were feathered or lightly sanded.

5.16.8 At the perimeter of the repair area, apply the prime and intermediate coats using brushing a
brush apply the finish coat using either brush or spray. Correct curing time shall be allowed for
each coat before application of the succeeding coat in accordance with the paint manufacturer's
