1. Scope
1.1 This procedure prescribes the requirements for a Positive Material Identification (PMI) to verify
alloy materials and to assure that correct materials are used at the places of pressure retaining
parts, piping, and other equipment.
1.2 This procedure describes the general requirements for safety, equipment, personnel, technique,
marking, and acceptance criteria of positive material identification (PMI) test.

2.Unless otherwise specified, sampling (less than 100%) inspection number of pieces shall be
the greater of N1 or N2.
Where, N1 = R x 100 or N in case N ≤ N1
N2 = R x N, maximum 10 in case N ≤ 200, 15 in case N > 200, in same lot/heat.
R = % which is less than 100% specified in the above table
N = Total number of pieces.
3.Under the condition that the heat number can be identified throughout fabrication. If not, 100%
verification is required.
4.1% of each alloy heat/lot of bolts/studs and nuts for structural fabrication and pressure
retaining bolting for pipe fabrication, and 10% pressure retaining fasteners for equipment shall
be verified. ASTM A193 B16 bolts/studs shall be 10% alloy verified regardless of application.
5.Sampling inspection of piping welds shall be done as the following:
- One(1) test per each WPS as a minimum
- Five(5) welds per each welder
- One(1) test per each lot. Every batch (heat) of consumables shall be regarded as one lot.
6. Minimum 5% of the quantity of the deposited welds by each WPS (cover pass only) for girth
welds or longitudinal seams. This shall be include minimum one(1) test for each applied WPS,
the first five(5) welds per each welder and one(1) test per each lot. For the longitudinal seams
of pressure vessel, this requirement shall be applied to each ten(10) feet of a weld seam, or
one(1) check of each seam if less than ten(10) feet long.
7.For items such as tubes, fasteners, bolts and nuts, a reduced sampling inspection shall be
normally acceptable, but requires the prior written approval from the Client. If any piece from
a sampling inspection piece is found as unacceptable, every piece of the lot shall be examined.
3.2 Exemption
- All grades of carbon steel
- Internal machinery parts
- Internal instrument parts such as float/displacer, diaphragm, etc.
- Non-pressure retaining pressure vessel internals such as baffles, trays, clips, supports,
pall-rings, etc.
- Non-pressure retaining fired heater, heat exchanger and boiler internals such as tube hangers,
tube supports, baffles, etc.
- Non-pressure retaining welds
- Electrical components
- Internal valve components such as plug, ball, disk, seat, stem, bonnet bolt, gasket, etc.
- Spiral wound metallic gasket
- Instrument tubing

- Compression type ferrules, fittings and components (e.g. valves, filters, etc.) for use with
19.05mm(3/4") outside diameter and smaller tubing.
- Steam tracing, instrument air, seal oil, lube oil and hydraulic pipe and tubing
- Pressure containing instrument housings in alloy systems or housings with a design pressure
below ASME Class 900 such as gauge glass housings and chamber, orifice meter tubes,
transmitter sensor body, vortex/ultrasonic meter body, orifice meter run, ventury tube,
float/diplacer chamber, etc.
- All B7/B7M bolts and 2H/2HM nuts
- All L7/L7M bolting

4. PMI Inspection
4.1 Positive material identification(PMI) inspection shall be performed to verify alloy contents of
alloy materials.
4.2 Test equipment shall be used as follows.
- Manufacturer : NITON
- Model : XLi- 818 Alloy Analyzer
- Principle of Operation : X - ray fluorescent (XRF) spectroscopy
4.3 Timing of test
PMI shall be performed on materials after fabrication.
PMI may not be repeated after fabrication as per the requirements of Para. 8 of this procedure.

4.4 Welds shall be tested after removal of slag or oxide from the weld surface.
On butt weld and fillet joints outside weld surface shall be tested.
In case of weld joints to be overlay welding, PMI shall be performed after overlay welding.

6. Acceptance Creteria

6.1 Acceptance criteria for base metal to be inspected / verified shall be within ± 10% of the
range of specified value in the material standard / specification.

6.2 Acceptance criteria for weld metals to be inspected / verified shall be within ± 12.5 % of the
range of specified value in the material standard / specification.
6.3 Acceptance criteria for dissimilar metal alloy welds and weld overlays shall be in accordance
with the welding consumable specified in the approved welding procedure.
6.4 The effects of dilution between the different base metals and the filler metal shall be taken into
account for determining the nominal as-deposited weld metal composition.
7. Handling Procedure of Rejection
If the PMI testing results fall outside the acceptable range using an instrument in this specification,
the more accurate analysis, if applicable, may be performed to determine the component
acceptance such as obtaining a chemical analysis performed by an independent testing laboratory.
The alternative test method or independent laboratory shall be acceptable to Contractor. The results
of the more accurate test method or independent analysis shall govern. If any component or weld is
found unacceptable, it shall be replaced and the replacement shall be alloy verified in accordance
with this specification.
Procedures shall be in place to ensure that rejected components are segregated and properly
identified to prevent reuse.
Rejected items shall be recorded and disposed as per Nonconformity Report or Punch.
8. Records
Test results shall include measured percentages of alloy elements for components that were accepted
or rejected and for those components that were rejected but accepted based on the independent
chemical analysis.
The following information shall be included in PMI record as minimum.
- Report No.
- Project name
- Purchase Order No.
- Report preparation date
- Item No. / Description
- Location where PMI performed such as weld, base metal, shell head etc.
- Material specification / type such as ASTM A240 Type 316L etc. with acceptance criteria
- PMI inspection date
- Type of instrument
- Measured Chemical elements such as Cr, Ni, Mo etc.
- Measured Chemical element values (%)
- Result of PMI (Accept or reject)
- Name & signature who carried our PMI
- Name & signature who endorsed the PMI result
PMI record shall be compiled into Manufacturing Data Record (MDR).

1.0 SCOPE (적용범위)

1.1 This procedure covers the requirements for the alloy verification test of alloy steel
material used for the pressure retaining parts.
이 절차서는 압력유지 부분의 합금분석을 수행하는데 적용된다.

1.2 This document is intended to be used as a guide for performing Positive Material
Identification using the NITON XLi, XLt & XLp series alloy analyzer in the field to insure
compliance with the refinery systems for ensuring Positive Material Identification.
이 절차서는 NITON XLi, XLt & XLp시리즈 합금분석기를 사용하여 금속재료의 PMI (Positive Material Identification)를
수행하는데 적용된다.

3.0 SAFETY (안전)

3.1 Any persons, including refinery personnel and their representatives, using approved alloy
analyzers at the refinery, will be given a safety orientation by the PMI coordinator prior
to usage of any PMI device.
검사원은 승인된 합금 분석기를 사용하여 모든 PMI 장치의 사용 이전에 PMI 코디네이터에 의해 안전 교육을 받아야 한
다.

3.2 The safety orientations will include as a minimum, the following :


최소 요건의 안전 교육은 다음에 따라 수행 하여야 한다.

(a) Radiation safety for radiation analyzers covering safe operation of the device and
emergency procedures in case of malfunction or unit damage during field usage.
현장사용 중에 고장이나 장비 손상의 경우에는 장치와 비상 절차에 따라 방사능 분석기에 대한 방사선 안전이 최우선이다.

(b) Personnel will demonstrate and acknowledge satisfactory understanding of safe


operation by passing and signing a written test for each analyzer to be used. This
documentation is to be kept on file by the PMI coordinator or his designate.
검사원은 사용되는 분석기에 대한 시험을 실시함으로써 자격를 인정합니다. PMI 코디네이터에 의해 보관한다.

3.3 PMI coordinator will periodically audit field usage of instruments for compliance with

4.0 PERSONNEL AUTHORIZED TO CONDUCT PMI INSPECTIONS (검사원 자격)

4.1 Personnel who perform this examination shall be trained by equipment maker or the
person who accredited by equipment maker.
검사자는 장비 제조업체로부터 훈련받아야 한다.

4.2 Only trained personnel shall interpret test result and make the report.
훈련된 검사자만이 검사 결과를 평가하고 보고서 작성한다.

4.3 Refinery inspection personnel that have completed safety training requirements.
검사자는 안전교육 요구사항을 완료하여야 한다.

4.4 Refiner's designated contractor representatives. These are people who have demonstrate
to the PMI coordinator or his designate, that in addition to the safety requirements, a
firm understanding of the NITON XLi, XLt & XLp series alloy analyzer operation,
auto-calibration frequency requirements and PMI job goals and objectives.
금속재료의 PMI를 수행하는 검사원은 NITON XLi, XLt & XLp 시리즈의 기본 원리 및 합금재료의 구성원소에 관한 지식
을 갖고, 또한 장비를 이용한 금속재료의 분석에 대해 충분한 이해를 가져야 한다.

4.5 All authorized PMI personnel will be familiar with and have copies available to them of
the following documents :

5.0 EQUIPMENT CALIBRATION (장비교정)

5.1 Calibration shall be re-done at least every two years.


장비교정은 최소 2년마다 실시한다.

5.2 To further assure the best Quality Assurance, NITON performs a second self-calibration
check every time you turn on or reset the instrument.

6.0 SURFACE CONDITION (표면상태)

6.1 The surface to be examined shall be according relevant material specification and shall be
chemical representative the whole of the test place to be examined. All traces of scale,
coatings, corrosion and liquids shall be removed prior to examination. The temperature of
the surface shall be between 0°and 41°. If the equipment has a high temperature probe
the temperature shall be between 0°and 400°C.
표면 및 관련 재료의 사양에 따라야한다 검사로 화학 대표적인 시험 장소의 전체를 검사해야한다. 코팅, 부식 및 액체의
모든 흔적은 시험 전에 제거하여야한다. 표면의 온도는 0 °와 41 ° 사이여야 한다. 장비는 고온 프로브가 있는 경우 온도
가 0 ° 400 ° C로 사이로 하여야한다

7.0 VERIFICATION OF THE EQUIPMENT (장비의 검증)


Starting examination, after 2 hours of work, after a battery change, when significant
spread in readings is observed and at the end of each examination a Ti-verification shall
be executed. Good functioning of the equipment shall be indicated by a 100% titanium
measurement. When required by the client, on regular time intervals, the proper
functioning of the equipment shall be verified with certified samples of "known" alloy
composition similar to the measure samples.
검사 시작 2 시간 후, 배터리 교체 후, 각각의 시험의 끝 부분에 Ti 검증을 실행하여야한다. 100 % 티타늄 측정에 의해서
지시되어야한다. 클라이언트가 필요한 경우, 정기적인 시간 간격에, 장비의 적절한 작동은 "알려진"합금 조성 측정 샘플과
비슷한 공인 샘플 확인하여야한다.

8.0 PLACEMENT OF THE MEASURE PROBE (프로브의 위치)


If the sample can't be measured in contact or the probe window is not completely
covered the measurement uncertainty will increase.
샘플에 직접 접촉으로 측정할 수없는 경우나 프로브 창이 완전히 커버하여 측정할 수 없는 경우는 불확실성이 증가한다.

9.0 TECHNIQUE (기법)

9.1 Depress and slide the "on/off/esc" switch on the bottom of the instrument to the on
position. The NITON will beep when the instrument has completed its initial boot and
login.
스위치를 ON위치에 놓는다. 장비가 초기 부팅하고 로그인을 완료하면 경고음이 난다.

9.2 From the Main menu, make sure that the allow points to press Enter.

메인 메뉴에서, 포인트가 Enter 키를 누를 수 있는지 확인한다.

9.3 The caution radiation floats Press "Yes", menu floats if it inputs the password number to
30sec wait on this screen.
방사선 경고창이 뜨는데, 30초 안에 비밀번호를 입력하면 화면에 메뉴가 뜬다.

9.4 Warming up to main menu, press to "utilities" icon and press to calibrate icon the press
"calibration detector" begin self-calibration. Once calibration if complete, you can toggle
into any other mode without recalibration. press to "on/off/esc" and move to main menu.
메인 메뉴를 워밍업 하려면, "utilities"아이콘과, 교정 아이콘을 누르고 "calibration detector"를 누르면 자체 교정을 시작
한다. 교정이 완료되면, 재교정 없이 메인 메뉴의 "OFF, ESC, ON"을 눌러서 다른 모드로 전환할 수 있다.

9.5 The examination is possible on main menu screen if it pushes "test mode" button.
검사는 "test mode"버튼을 누르면 메인 메뉴 화면에서 가능하다.

9.6 The pull trigger and begin the measurement from test mode. measurement time over the
30sec.
손잡이의 방아쇠를 당기면 및 테스트 모드에서 측정을 시작한다. 측정 시간은 30초 이상 유지한다.

9.7 Push the safety slide out from under the shutter release. When the slide is in place, you
cannot press in the release.
셔터 릴리스 아래에서로부터 안전 슬라이드를 밀어낸다. 슬라이드가 제위치에 있을 때, 릴리스를 누를 수 없다

10.0 RESULT SCREEN (결과화면)

10.1 The reading number, time and date appear at the top of the screen.
리딩 번호, 시간과 날짜가 화면의 상단에 나타난다.

10.2 The middle part of the screen displays the alloy identification. If instrument cannot match
the sample with an alloy in its alloy library, the instrument will display unknown.
화면의 중앙 부분은 합금 식별을 표시한다. 장비는 합금 라이브러리의 합금으로 샘플과 일치하지 않으면 식별할 수없다고
표시된다.

10.3 The lower part of the screen shows the chemistry of the sample, with the percentages of
each of the table 1. Elements not detected in the sample will not appear on the screen.
화면의 하단 부분은 표 1의 각 비율과 샘플의 화학 정보를 보여준다. 샘플에서 발견된 원소가 아니라면 화면에 나타나지
않는다.

11.2 To avoid loss of data, download data before the memory is completely full. Clear the
memory after downloading.

11.4 The erase readings screen will appear with the following choices :
결과값 삭제화면에서 다음을 선택한다.

(1) Erase all readings (모든값 삭제)


(2) Erase all signatures (전체서명 삭제)
(3) Cancel do not erase (삭제 취소)
(4) Exit to Main Menu. (메인메뉴로 복귀)

12.0 DOWNLOADING DATA (데이터 전송)

12.1 Open the "NDTr" program on your computer and open a file.
컴퓨터에 있는 "NDTr"프로그램을 열고 파일을 연다.

12.2 Connect NITON to your computer with the standard serial port cable that is provided.
제공되는 표준 시리얼 포트 케이블로 컴퓨터에 장비를 연결한다.

12.3 From the Main Menu, use the Arrow buttons, select Download Data and press Enter.
메인 메뉴에서, 화살표 버튼을 사용하여 다운로드 데이터를 선택하고 Enter 키를 누른다.

12.4 Select the baud rate at which you wish to download and press Enter. Select the first to
the last readings you wish to download.
전송 속도를 선택하고 Enter 키를 누른다. 다운로드하고자하는 마지막 결과값을 가장 먼저 선택한다.

13.0 ACCEPTANCE STANDARD (합격기준)


For acceptance, It must be demonstrated that the materials contain the amounts of
alloying elements shown in the material specification. alloys shall be acceptance of if the
alloying elements are each between 90 percent of the minimum and 110 percent of the
maximum permitted by the material specification.
재료 사양에 표시된 요소를 합금의 양을 포함하는 것을 증명해야한다. 합금은 합금성분이 최소의 90 %와 자재 사양이 허
용하는 최대의 110 %이어야 한다.

14.0 RECORDS
PMI records shall be retained for a period of 5 years.
검사 결과 보고서는 5년간 보관하여야 한다.
