Pros and Cons of Different CWC
Methods

METHOD PROS CONS

Impingement  Semi-automatic  FBE>650µm
 Use for onshore and subsea pipeline  Cannot be easily mobilized
 All pipe sizes  Density limitation due to 8-12% voids (max.
 High output (35-40 joints/hr) 3400 kg/m3)
 Water curing  More dusts/dirt from production
 Anode installed before CWC
 End rings to establish cutback
Compression-  Semi-automatic  Pipe sizes up to 48” or 1219 mm
wrapping  Use for onshore and subsea pipeline  Lower output (20-25 joints/hr)
 FBE can be as low as 300µm  Cutback made by cut out saw
 Curing by plastic wrap as a membrane  Anode installed after CWC
 Cleaner production  Density limitation due to 8-12% voids (max.
 Easy plant mobilization 3400 kg/m3)
Casting  Use for short spans, bends, river crossing, etc.  Manual and lab extensive
 All pipe sizes  Slow production and not suited for large
 Can be applied in the field quantities
 Concrete be vibrated to eliminate voids

Steel Cage vs. Wire Mesh
Reinforcement
• Reinforcing steel shall be steel cage. Steel bars shall conform to
ASTM A185 with a minimum bar diameter of 5.0mm. The
material used shall conform to the tensile property
requirements in Table 1 of ASTM A82. For welded cages, the
spacing between circumferential bars should be maximum 120
mm. Galvanised welded wire mesh shall only be used for
surface reinforcement for concrete thickness > 100 mm where
the first layer of reinforcement shall be steel welded cage. If
wire mesh is used it shall be Bekaert "Armapipe" or Company-
approved equivalent conforming to ASTM A82.
• The number of layers of reinforcement shall be determined by
the required concrete coating thickness as follows:
– Up to 100 mm 1 layer (Cage reinforcement)
– over 100 mm 2 layers (First layer shall be cage reinforcement)

28
Thick CWC Coating
It has been the BrederoShaw manufacturing standards using a fabricated
reinforcement cage made from cold drawn steel bars, >3mm dia. complying with
ISO 21809-5 and DNV OS F101 for offshore impinged concrete application since
1980s.

This method is ‘superior’, as: Cage reinforcement

•Larger wire dia. (>3mm).
•Each cage is specifically made to pipe size and
concrete thickness.
•More controlled and uniform reinforcement layout,
installation/spacing.
•Less manual operation, reduced safety risk during
coating application.
•Hassle free coating application, no ‘finishing/manual
cutting trimming work’.
Cage reinforcement has been used on all major offshore projects since 1980s and by
BSI since 2001, meeting the required concrete strength, weight and successfully
installed.
Among the most recent projects coated include Icthys URF, Inpex GEP, Wheatstone,
Gumusut, JDA Eva, Julimar, SMK.
