4.2 Activity (Integration of Vocabulary Skills)

10 minutes This time, we are going to play a game and try to figure out the missing
words in sentences. You will have to figure out which words are covered.

Look how ____ that cat is! I think that is the smallest cat I've ever seen!
Answer: TINY
The team was ______ as the crowd cheered for them.
Answer: INSPIRED
Thomas went to the ____ of the mountain, and because it was so high, he
had to take a tank of oxygen with him.

Answer: SYNONYMS
Very good! These words are synonyms. The underlined words and the words
that you answered or determined are called CONTEXT CLUES.
Context- refers to the parts of a piece of writing that precede or follow a word
and contributes to its whole meaning.
It is the setting of a word or phrase in speaking or writing that determines or
affects its meaning. It can be pictures, sounds, other words or physical
surroundings.
Clue- a phrase or word provided as a hint to help find an answer.
Context Clues- provide further information about a word or phrase that
helps readers understand its meaning.

There are 4 types of context clues that we can use to help us define a difficult
or unusual word.
1. Synonym or Restatement Clue
2. Definition or Statement Clue
3. Antonym or Contrast Clue
4. Explaination or Example Clue

4.3 Analysis Today we will going to tackle about Synonym or Restatement Clue.

8 minutes Synonym- a word that is similar to another word or has a closely related
meaning.
Synonym or Restatement Clue- is another word or phrase with the same or
a similar meaning is used.
Signals: in other word, that is, also, known as, sometimes called and or.

Let the pupils identify the context clue in each sentence.

1. Anna shouts continuously, or all the time and it makes me


uncomfortable.

2. The manager felt remorse, or shame, for hiring some incompetent


employees.

3. The remote site was far away from our current location.

4. She empathize her friend by giving her a hug.

reconstruct a sentence using the underlined/unfamiliar word.

Group 3. Dramatize the short story below.

There was a young girl who was aloof. She always seemed unsociable,
unapproachable, and uninterested. She doesn’t have friends but she loves
biking. One day she went out to the park. She was cautious crossing the
street also careful riding her bike. Suddenly, she never noticed starving
children coming across her way. She was about to run over or hit them. She
didn’t apologized or say sorry. However, when she saw the children asking
for food and looks hungry, she felt compassion or pity for their suffering.
Therefore, she decided to help them out by giving them the food she
brought for her snacks.
