ELEMENTS AND

ISOTOPES
ELEMENTS
• it is a pure substance that
contains only one atom.
• Isotope
 Isotopes are atoms of the same elements
which have different number of neutrons and
mass numbers, but have the same number of
protons and electrons.
• Isotope Notation
 Also known as nuclear notation, is important because it
allows us to use a visual symbol to easily determine an
isotope's mass number, atomic number, and to determine the
number of neutrons and protons in the nucleus without
having to use a lot of words
EXAMPLE OF ISOTOPE NOTATION
• Carbon-14?

a. Isotopic Notation

• Uranium-238
• Sodium-23
