Compact RIO control system from
National Instruments

Chassis with built-in 400MHz FPGA

based processor. Modular structure.
Programmed in LabView on WinXP
PC platform
Ethernet, TCP/IP
Pt100 temperature sensors module

Digital I/O module, 32 channels

Analog input module, 32 chs, 16 bits, -5V -> +5V

Digital I/O module, 32 channels

Pt100 temperature sensors module

SCX Users Group Meeting – Heidelberg, May 12, 2011 – Jon Wikne
Usage of different module types

Digital I/O is used for some power supply controls,

plus for programming the slit current ranges.

Analog inputs are used for slit current readout.

Pt100 inputs monitor the coolant and other temperatures.

New Anode Power Supply (APS)

From Fug, type HCH 100000M-10000

0->10kV, 10A maximum
Control system plus 10 modules, each 1A max

SCX Users Group Meeting – Heidelberg, May 12, 2011 – Jon Wikne
New Main Magnet power supply

From Danfysik, System 8500 PS854

0->875A, 10ppm long-term regulation, 0->150V

SCX Users Group Meeting – Heidelberg, May 12, 2011 – Jon Wikne
New CC8 power supply

Motivation: Old HP power supplies had intermittent errors

that were hard to locate. Also, two supplies were in series.
New supply from Delta Elektronika, SM70-90, 0->78V, 0-90A

Old CC7

New CC8

Interfacing new power supplies

New Main Magnet supply: RS-232 or adaption box to IBA system

analog interface, selectable.

New Switching Magnet supplies: RS-232.

New Quadrupole and Bending Magnet supplies: Ethernet, TCP/IP.

New CC8 supply: Modified interface card in CC rack to avoid

changes to IBA system. Ethernet not presently used.

New Anode Power supply: Custom adaption box to ancient analog

voltage control and pushbutton logic interface, original Scanditronix
style!

SCX Users Group Meeting – Heidelberg, May 12, 2011 – Jon Wikne
New supplies, no more problems?

Unfortunately, no.

1) One module in Fug APS burnt completely. Much smoke.

All modules shipped back for repair. Process took several
weeks. No obvious reason detected.

2) One Danfysik SW magnet supply burnt. Unit shipped

back for repair. No obvious reason detected.

3) Missing 22pF capacitor in Danfysik Main Magnet supply.

Occasional unstability. Fixed by Danfysik engineer on site.

4) Delta CC8 supply failed occasionally. Error indication

“ AC failure” , but mains supply well within specs. Unit
shipped back for repair. Delta found no error. One circuit
board was replaced based on suspicion, OK since.

New slit readout electronics

Custom designed, 8 readout channels on two PCBs

in same shielded box. 4 programmable ranges,
0->50nA, 0->500nA, 0-5μ A, 0->50μ A, mapped to 0->5V

SCX Users Group Meeting – Heidelberg, May 12, 2011 – Jon Wikne
Coolant temperature monitoring

We have mounted a number of Pt100 type sensors in many

places on the cooling lines, to get a better understanding
of temperature gradients and system operation.

There have been numerous cooling system problems

that we do not fully understand!

Programming and displaying

Andrey Semchenkov has done an excellent job in programming

the new part of the control system in LabView on WinXP.
There have been many challenges, especially since there are
several different interfaces involved: TCP/IP, RS-485 and RS-232
for different parts of the system.

On the following slides some of the “ human interaction”

interface panels that have been created are shown.

IBA Control System Status

The IBA control system has been running quite stably,

apart from a couple of irritating issues:

1) The TCP/IP link from the control PC to the Simatic rack

stops working with irregular intervals. Only known solution:
Reboot PC.

2) The “ auto-stabilization” feature for maintaining stable beam

current by “ tracking” readjustment of CC8 does not work.

Feature very much missed: Store / recall of parameters!

This was to be incorporated in “ Stage 2” , for which the
price tag was way too high for OCL.
