2. Promotion
2.1 Introduction
Commercial marketing refers to the process of promoting and selling products or services to
customers. It involves understanding customer needs and preferences, developing products or
services that meet those needs, pricing them appropriately, and making them available through
distribution channels. Promotion is one of the four major elements of marketing, along with
product, price, and place (distribution).

In the context of tourism and hospitality, promotion plays a significant role. It involves creating
awareness and interest in destinations, hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality services.
Promotion can include advertising, public relations, social media marketing, and other
communication strategies to attract tourists and guests. Effective promotion can lead to increased
tourist traffic, hotel bookings, and restaurant reservations, ultimately driving revenue for the
tourism and hospitality industry.

Promotion in the tourism and hospitality sector often emphasizes the unique experiences and
attractions offered by a destination or a particular establishment. It aims to create a compelling
narrative that entices potential visitors and guests to choose a specific location or service.
Successful promotion can help build a positive reputation for a destination or hospitality
business, ultimately contributing to its long-term success.

In this work, we have explored the promotional mix in the context of businesses in the tourism
and hospitality industry. The promotional mix is comprised of various elements that businesses
use to communicate with their target audience and promote their products or services. We have
provided examples of how businesses in the tourism and hospitality industry can utilize the
promotional mix to effectively reach their customers.

4
2.2 Promotional Mix
Promotion is the role of the marketing mix in tourism. It encompasses all of the ways that the
company markets and advertises the business. This may include typical types of marketing, such
as placing ads in tourist magazines and offering discount coupons in travel guides. It may also
include going from hotel to hotel in the area and leaving a postcard or flier for the service at each
hotel room door. The promotional mix for businesses in tourism and hospitality typically
includes advertising, sales promotion, public relations, direct marketing, and personal selling.
Here are some examples of how these elements are utilized:

 Advertising: Hotels and resorts often use various advertising channels such as social
media, Influencer Marketing, and display ads to showcase their amenities and attract
guests. Online travel agencies also heavily rely on advertising to reach potential travelers.
 Sales Promotion: In the tourism industry, businesses may offer limited-time promotions
for vacation packages, hotel stays, or attractions to encourage bookings. For example, a
resort might offer a "stay 3 nights, get the 4th night free" deal to attract more guests
during off-peak seasons.
 Public Relations: A hotel chain might engage in public relations efforts to maintain a
positive brand image through activities such as media relations, event sponsorship, and
community outreach. Marriott International is known for its extensive public relations
efforts to build and maintain a strong brand reputation.
 Direct Marketing: Travel companies often use direct marketing to reach potential
customers directly through email marketing campaigns promoting travel deals,
personalized vacation packages, or loyalty programs.
 Personal Selling: Travel agents provide personalized recommendations and assistance to
customers booking trips, offering a one-on-one interaction that can influence travel
decisions.

By effectively integrating these promotional mix elements, businesses in tourism and hospitality
can reach a wide audience, build brand awareness, and influence consumer behavior to drive
bookings and customer loyalty.

5
2.3 Travel review sites
Travel review sites are essential platforms where travelers can share their experiences, provide
ratings, and write detailed reviews about hotels, restaurants, attractions, and other travel-related
services. These platforms serve as a valuable resource for potential travelers, allowing them to
access authentic feedback from fellow travelers before making decisions about where to stay,
dine, and visit.

The primary function of travel review sites is to provide a space for travelers to share their
experiences and opinions about various aspects of their trips. This includes accommodations,
dining experiences, tourist attractions, and other services they encountered during their travels.
By offering a platform for users to rate and review these businesses, travel review sites empower
travelers to make informed decisions based on the real-life experiences of others.

One of the key roles of travel review sites is to influence the reputation and visibility of travel
businesses. Positive reviews and high ratings can significantly impact the success of a hotel,
restaurant, or attraction by building trust and credibility among potential customers. Conversely,
negative reviews can have a detrimental effect on a business's reputation, potentially leading to a
decrease in bookings and revenue.

Some of the most well-known travel review sites globally include Trip Advisor, Yelp, and
Google Reviews. These platforms cover a wide range of travel-related businesses and
destinations, allowing users to access a wealth of information and feedback from fellow
travelers.

There are several advantages for both travelers and businesses when it comes to travel review
sites. For travelers, these platforms provide a level of transparency and authenticity that can
guide their decision making process. They can gain insights into the quality of services offered
by different businesses and make more informed choices based on the collective experiences
shared by others.

6
For businesses in the travel and hospitality industry, positive reviews on these platforms can lead
to increased exposure and trust among potential customers. Positive feedback can also serve as a
valuable marketing tool, influencing the decisions of prospective guests and visitors.
Additionally, reviews offer businesses an opportunity to receive direct feedback from customers,
enabling them to identify areas for improvement and enhance the overall customer experience.

However, there are also potential disadvantages associated with travel review sites. Negative
reviews can significantly impact a business's reputation and deter potential customers from
booking. Businesses have limited control over what customers post on these platforms, making it
challenging to manage their online reputation effectively.

To exploit the benefits of travel review sites, businesses should actively engage with these
platforms. Encouraging satisfied customers to leave positive reviews can enhance a business's
online reputation and attract more customers. Additionally, responding to reviews—both positive
and negative demonstrates that the business values customer feedback and is committed to
addressing any concerns. Furthermore, businesses should use the feedback from reviews to
identify areas for improvement and enhance the overall customer experience.

Travel review sites play a significant role in shaping travelers' decisions and can greatly impact
the success of businesses in the tourism and hospitality industry. It is essential for businesses to
actively manage their presence on these platforms and leverage them as a tool for enhancing
their reputation and attracting more customers. By understanding the dynamics of travel review
sites and actively engaging with them, businesses can harness the power of user-generated
content to their advantage.
