POSITION PAPER
● essay form, 5-7 sentences
● presents your stand, arguable, a topic for debate
● worth reading to, will convince the audience
● your job is to take one side
HOW TO WRITE A CONCEPT PAPER:
1. introductory sentence, including the topic and background information
2. addressing all sides of the issue
3. your stand/claim
ISSUE CRITERIA

● stablish plausibility of a topic
● “is it a real issue?” “is it controversial?” “are you interested of the topic” “is the topic
manageable?”
ANALYZING AN ISSUE
● doing a research on the subject matter - take a side

SUPPORTING EVIDENCES INCLUDES:
1. FACTUAL KNOWLEDGE - verifiable, agreed by almost everyone, does not really
need research
2. STATISTICAL INFERENCES - presented in number forms, facts
3. INFORMED OPINION - opinion develop through research, gathered knowledge
4. PERSONAL TESTIMONY - personal experience related by knowledge

TIPS ON HOW TO CREATE COMPREHENSIVE AND DETAILED POSITION PAPER:
● brief introduction, its history regarding the topic
● background of the topic
● quotes by the state representative or statistical data
● specify recommendation for a resolution for the topic
TIPS FOR WRITING A GOOD POSITION PAPER:
● use simple language
● give each separate idea its own paragraph
● make sure each paragraph starts with a topic sentence
● proofreading for mistakes
● cite your sources

INTRODUCTION
● 1 paragraph
● start with a topic sentence that attracts attention and summarized the issue
● inform the reader of your point of view
BODY
● 3 paragraph
● focus on 3 main points:
- general statement of the position

- past experience and authoritative testimony
CONCLUSION
● 1 - 2 paragraph
● summarized, then conclude, your argument
QUALITIES OF A CONVINCING POSITION PAPER:
● clear statement that must be defended
● assesses conflicting opinions
● firm stand
● list arguments
● presents factual evidences or proofs to support argument
CREATE AN OUTLINE
● introduce yout topic with little background information
● build up to your thesis statement, which assers your position
WHEN YOU WRITE A POSITION PAPER:
● write with confidence, state your opinion with authority, your goal is to
demonstrate that your position is the correct one, be assertive, state your
points then back them up with evidence
