Linguistic Form versus Discourse Function

Essentially, both linguistic form and discourse function can be termed as crucial concepts

in linguistics which are said to play a vital role in the development of a language. Linguistic form

can be described as the structural and meaningful aspect of language or speech. They essentially

comprise of grammar, morphology, semantics and syntax. On the other hand, discourse function

can be described as how language is used to express meaning and achieve a precise

communication goal through different contexts. In this essay we will examine in detail the

relationship between the two with evidence from relevant examples.

Consequently, using the phrase “They are going to the movies” as an illustration. We can

deduce that “she” is the subject, “are going” is the present continuous tense while “to the

movies” is the prepositional phrase and all this form part of the linguistic form. On the other

hand, if the phrase is used in a narrative, it can be used to set a scene contrary if it were used in a

conversation whereby the phrase conveys an ongoing activity or a continuing action. Thus, the

discourse function transcends its structural elements. Subsequently, in a question like “Are they

going to the museum?” the linguistic form is exhibited in an interrogative structure. However, its

function can either be used to confirm their attendance or simply to express their interest. Here,

the discourse function plays a role in instigating social interaction.

In conclusion, the understanding of the two concept plays a vital role in effective

communication of language. Whereas, discourse function determines how the language is used to

convey particular attitudes, intentions or emotions, linguistic form provides the framework of the

language. The understanding of both is essential in comprehending the complexity of language

and the various ways it can be used in different contexts.
