Sample Exam 1
Sample Exam 1
Programme:
The exam duration is 45 minutes. The final exam may contain more or less questions
than given here for practicing purposes. Also, please note that these questions are not
representative. This means that you are not supposed to draw any conclusions regard-
ing the level of difficulty, the relation between the number of points and exam length,
the importance of the individual topics covered in the lecture, or things like that from
the sample questions. If you have further questions, please contact the responsible as-
sistants at the Chair.

a) Derive the differential equation that describes the model using the given parameters.
b) Give in two drawings the stress-time and strain-time relation for the standardized
one-dimensional creep test (oo > o) applied to this model.
c) Explain in a few words how this model differs from the Kelvin-Voigt and Maxwell
models.

Question 2.
(X marks)
From a FE simulation, the plane stress state of a cylindrical pressure vessel at a point is
determined as shown in Fig. 2. Answer the following questions:
a.) Assuming a Tresca model for plasticity with a yield strength of o, = 15MPa, assess
if this point yields or not.
b.) In general, do you expect that a material yields first with respect to Tresca or with
respect to the von Mises model for plasticity?
c.) Draw the principal two-dimensional yield surfaces of Tresca and von Mises using
principle stresses as coordinates.

Question 5.
(X marks)
Considering the one-dimensional tension case for a viscoelastic material, answer the fol-
lowing questions:
a.) Draw the two diagrams for a standard creep test (time-stress and time-strain dia-
grams) and explain them briefly.
Explain by a second diagram what is meant by primary, seconday and tertiary creep.

The dual potentials (complementary energy and dissipation) for a Maxwell model are:
o
v - L (1E”tra(:e(a2)—%(trace(a))z)
P (1+ytra(:e(az)—é(tra(:e(fl))z)
with E as the Young’s modulus, v as the Poisson ratio, and o and p as the stress
tensor and the material density, respectively. 1 and , are the additional coefficients
characterizing viscosity.
Derive from these equations the two expressions describing the dependency of the
elastic strain rate £{/*** and the anelastic strain rate éfj”"l““ on the stress rate. As-
sume the uni-axial case for this.

Question 6.
(X marks)
A certain material sample is assumed to follow von Mises-plasticity (no hardening). In a
three-dimensional tension experiment, the material was observed to suffer plastic flow at
a stress state op. Answer if you expect plastic flow at the stress state o4 and/or at the
stress state o3 (use calculations as well as explanations to motivate your answer)!
