1. Solve :

1 x dy x2 − xy + y 2
(i) dx − dy = 0 ; (ii) = ; (iii) y ′ − 3y = 9 ex .
y (ln x)3 dx xy

2.
A particle falls freely from rest under gravity in a resisting medium, the resistance
varying as the velocity.
At time t after the start, let the velocity be v. Let the forces acting on the particle
be mg downwards and the resistance kmv upwards (the resistance per unit mass
being taken as kv where k is a fixed constant ).
Find the velocity after it has fallen for t seconds.

[Note: Form the first order differential equation and solve for the dependent vari-
able].

3. Solve the differential equations:

(i) ( x + y ) dx + ( x − y ) dy = 0 ;

(ii) ( 6x + y 2 ) dx + y ( 2x − 3y ) dy = 0 ;

(iii) ( 2x3 − xy 2 − 2y + 3 ) dx − ( x2 y + 2x ) dy = 0 ;

(iv) ( 2xy + y ) dx + ( x2 − x ) dy = 0 ;

(v) ( y 2 − 2xy + 6x ) dx − ( x2 − 2xy + 2 ) dy = 0 ;

(vi) ( 1 + y 2 ) dx + ( x2 y + y ) dy = 0 ;

(vii) ( 2y − 5xy 2 ) dx + ( x − 3x2 y ) dy = 0 .

(a) Find an interval in which the solution of the given initial value problem (IVP)

x ( x − 4 ) y ′ + y = 0, y(2) = 1,

is certain to exist.

(b) Find an interval where the IVP
