Nightingale Empowerment Foundation (NEF), is a
not-for-profit organization established under the
Indian Trusts Act 1982. It was registered in April
2012 and is based in Bangalore.

and is managed by a Board of Trustees comprising
of committed professionals. In order to give a
nationwide coverage to this unique effort, NEF has
been established as a separate entity.

post-retirement employment.

Historically, communities, families and societies in India have always lent a shoulder to the
ageing, but as the youth embrace the journey of becoming digital nomads, our senior citizens
find themselves in unwilling social isolation, rarely being able to benefit, enjoy or better their
own lived experiences via technology.

Just like children, seniors also display a keenness to learn and a curiosity about new-age
technologies. Building trust-worthy environments that address their concern with care and
understanding is crucial to making them digitally literate use technology.

Nightingale Empowerment Foundation aims to

conduct a tailor-made program for over 500 senior
citizens with the following content:

 Smartphone basics
 Digital payments and online banking
 Booking cabs, train and bus tickets
 Ordering groceries and medicines
 Cyber Safety

These will be conducted on one full day at 3 different

locations in Bangalore with at least 150 senior citizens
at each location.

Impact of the Program.

The training program will embolden senior citizens to use the available
digital resources to improve the quality of their lives. It will also empower
these elders with tricks and tips on protecting themselves and their
resources while performing online transactions.

Ageing is a natural and an inevitable process - a true
celebration of life and experiences. While senior
citizens may not be at their youthful best physically, but
one is at a greater advantage in terms of experience,
emotional strength and wisdom.

However, there is no denying the fact that elders,

referred to as senior citizens (in the age bracket of 60+)
face numerous challenges in the modern world. These
challenges, which could be physical or mental, are
further aggravated due to the fast changing technology
and digitalisation which got compounded because of
the pandemic.

While Covid boosted the pace of digitalization, the

younger generation, got busy catching up with the trends and adapting to the technological
changes in the society. But Senior Citizens were left behind. While the youth were busy building
social connections digitally, our seniors are still struggling to catch up.

A survey carried out of 1,580 elderly persons across cities in 8 states shows that:

 63.2% said that the lockdowns affected their communication with family & friends
 34.2% were worried about being socially isolated
 60% elders felt their children do not have time to help them become digitally literate
 More than 90% senior citizens wanted to learn how to use WhatsApp, pay bills, book
cabs and use net banking.

The mindset of elders has evolved and changed in a way that even they are beginning to see
the utility of technology. This happened during the time of quarantine, when people from all
over the world were locked in their houses. Technology made quarantine so much easier, from
watching YouTube videos and baking to ordering groceries and being able to talk to family and
friends. Till before the pandemic, everyone believed that digital literacy is a luxury, but with
the Covid-19 pandemic and everything going online and virtual, we believe that digital literacy
requires inclusion in everyone’s lives.
