Utpala Dynasty (855 – 939 AD)
• Avantivarman (855 – 883 AD) :
• Restored Peace Back in Kashmir.
• His rule has been mentioned in
Book V of Rajtarangini.
• He built the temples of Avantiswara
and Awantiswamin dedicated to
Shiva and Vishnu in Avantipur.
• Founded the town of Avantipura.
Suyya/Surya

Engineer/Architect
Engineering operations and Promotion of Agriculture.
Dam on Jhelum River
Designed the town of Suyyapur, now called Sopore.
Shankarvarman
He was son of Avantivarman.
His reign came to be known for its excessive taxation called
Grahkrtya.
He founded the city of Sankarapurapattana.
He introduced Begar (Forced Labour) in Kashmir.
It was called Bharodhi or Rudhabharodhi.
Died in 902 of a stray arrow at Urusha (Modern Day Hazara,
Pakistan)
Gopalverma ( 902 – 904)

Sugandha, Queen of Shankarvarman – regent

• Prabhakaradeva employed Ramadeva—one of his


relatives—to assassinate the king by practice of
witchcraft.

• Gopalavarman died of a fever soon and Ramadeva died


by suicide, after his conspiracy became public knowledge
Queen Sugandha (904-906)

Dethroned by Tantrins and installed Partha as Monarch.


Lived in Haskapura (Ushkur, Baramulla), continued to claim the
throne.
914 – war against Partha and Tantrins, imprisoned and later
killed in a Buddhist Monastery called Nispalaka Vihara.
She built a Vishnu Temple – Vishnu Gopala Keshava.
• Last Ruler was Suravarman.
