AIM:
To verify the formula of sum of first n natural numbers, i.e.,
𝒏(𝒏+𝟏)

MATERIALS REQUIRED: Graph paper, geometry

box, colour pencils, pair of scissors, glue.

PRE-REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE:

1. Natural numbers
2. Construction of histograms
3. Area of rectangle and squares

PROCEDURE:

Let us consider the sum of natural numbers say from 1 to 10 i.e.

1+2+3+…+9+10.
Here n = 10 and n+1=11

Step 1:Take a squared paper of size 1011 squares and paste it on a

blank sheet.

Step 2: On the left side vertical line, mark the squares by 1, 2,

3,…,10 and on the horizontal line, mark the squares by 1, 2,
3,…,11.

Step 3: With the help of colour pencils, shade rectangles of length

equal to 1cm, 2cm,…,10cm and of 1cm width each.
 OBSERVATION:

1. As seen in the figure, the two parts of the grid completely overlap
each other.
2. So, we can say that area of each parts obtained from the grid
which was a rectangle of dimensions 10  11 is exactly half of the
grid.

Therefore,

Area of the whole squared paper is 10  11 cm2

Area of the shaded portion is ½ 10 11cm2

This verifies for n = 10,

Sum of first 10 natural numbers(each of the cut portion) = ½ 10 11

So, the sum of first n natural numbers = ½  n  (n+1)

CALCULATION

ar(I) + ar(II) + …………+ar(X) = (11) + (12) +……..+(110)

= (1+2+……..+10)unit2
=55 unit2
Also,
Ar(shaded portion) = ½  l  b
= ½ 10  11 unit2
= 55 unit2
RESULT

Ar(shaded portion) = ar(I) + ar(II) + ……+ar(X) = ½ 10 11 unit2

CONCLUSION
Hence, its verified that the sum of first ten natural numbers is
½ 10  11. Similarly, we obtain the formula for the sum of first n
natural numbers as
𝒏(𝒏 + 𝟏)
𝟐
