Exercise 1: Laboratory Safety

Activity 1

1. Sketch the floor plan of the laboratory. Indicate the locations of exits, eyewash, fume hoods, fire
extinguisher, first aid kit, and safety shower.

2. List 5 good laboratory practices (GLP) you can find in this laboratory.

3. Why should you wash your hands before leaving the laboratory?

I have read and will comply with all stated laboratory safety rules.

Exercise 2: Pictograms and the Safety Data Sheet

Activity 2: Ammonium Nitrate and an Explosion

1. On August 4, 2020, two massive explosions occurred at the port of the capital city of Lebanon, Beirut, leaving
at least 200 people dead and 6000 injured. The culprit was the detonation of 2,750 tons of Ammonium Nitrate
(NHNO,) that were stored unsafely at a warehouse in the port. (Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-
middle-east-53668493). If the media asked you, being the Safety Officer of a reputable company, what would
you do or what would you have done to keep it from exploding given the condition that it should stay at the
port for at least 6 years?
To answer that, look for the Safety Data Sheet of Ammonium, Nitrate and find relevant information.

2. Two of the most common gases used for cooking in households are liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and butane.
Find an SDS of either gas (1 only, whichever you use at home or boarding house) and evaluate your present
storage condition. Does it comply to the standards stated in the SDS? If yes, how is it stored? If not, what
measures did you do to correct It?

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer in ESSAY form. Write legibly/type your answers on a white sheet of paper.

Experiment 4: Paper Chromatography: A Separation Technique

Data and Results:

Attach the paper chromatography upon submission of this activity. Label which one for ethanol and for water.

Part 1
1. What happens to the filter paper the moment it is inserted into the ethanol in the sample vial?

2. Does the black ink dot remain 5 mm from the edge of the strip of filter paper after 2 minutes?

3. Indicate the colors on the filter paper when the ethanol level reached about one (1) cm from the upper
edge of the filter paper. (Black ink is made up of different colors. Depending upon the manufacturer of
the pen used, varying colors may be seen. Blue and red are particularly common.)

4. Is the ink a mixture or a pure substance? Give a reason for your answer.

5. Which pigment in the black ink is most soluble and least soluble in ethanol? Explain your answer.

6. Is the black ink a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture? Explain your answer.

Part 2
1. Does the black ink on the filter paper remain 5 mm from the edge of the filter paper after 2 minutes?

2. What happens to the dot of black ink after 10 minutes?

Group #: Members:

3. Has the black ink dot separated into different components as in Part 1?

4. Can water be used to separate the components of black Ink?

5. Give a reason for your answer to question 4.

6. Why is this black ink described as "permanent"?
