ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

In successfully completing this project, many people have helped

me. I would like to thank all those who are related to this project.
Primarily, I would thank God for being able to complete this
project with success. Then I will thank my Principal Kardile Sir
and Maind Madam, under whose guidance I learned a lot about
this project. His suggestions and directions have helped in the
completion of this project.
Finally, I would like to thank my parents and friends who have
helped me with their valuable suggestions and guidance and
have been very helpful in various stages of project completion.

WHAT IS TEMREATURE
STRESSES
Stress is the force acting per unit area. The force can be of any
form. When the applied force is in the form of temperature the
resultant stress is called Thermal stress. It is observed when an
object expands or contracts due to a change in temperature.
Thus, we can define Thermal stress as:
“Stress caused due to the change in temperature”

Consider a thermal conducting rod, on heating, the rod

expands. The change in length will be directly proportional to
the amount of heat supplied and the coefficient of thermal
expansion. Thus, we can mathematically write thermal stress:

6
Causes of Thermal Stress
According to the laws of Thermodynamics, Thermal Stress is a
mechanical process that occurs due to the change in the internal
temperature of an object. Under normal conditions, any rise in
temperature causes additional stress. However, sometimes in
addition to stress, thermal shock can also occur which causes
the sudden fracture or cracking of an object.

Effects of Thermal Stress

Thermal stresses can have a significant effect on the structural
strength and stability if we do not consider it correctly. The
potential to creak cracks and breaks in various regions of major
weakness often occurs due to negligence in understanding
Thermal stress.

One of the most common examples of thermal stress is the

fracturing of glass that occurs when we heat the glass to a high
temperature and immediately dip into cold water. The crack and
fracture in the glass are different than the one that occurs as a
result of the impact.

APPLICATION OF
TEMPREATURE STRESSES
1. The behaviour of gasoline on a hot day provides an
example of liquid thermal expansion in response to an
increase in temperature. If car tank is filled and it left to
sit on the sun, then gasoline expand in volume.

2. When you want to open a tight jar it is recommended

that you run it under hot water. This expands the lid
ever so slightly to relieve all the stress and friction and
the jar opens up easily.

3. Train tracks are put in pieces and you can notice a
small gap between them. You can hear that gap in the
train's rhythm. The gap is to make it easy for the tracks
to expand and contract without putting undue stress on
each other.

4. Expansion joints on bridges and overpasses. The bridge

deck gets longer in the heat of summer and contracts in
the cold of winter.
