CERTIFICATE
MAHARASTRA STATE BOARD OF TECHNICAL
EDUCATION
This is to certify that the students, had carried out the Micro
project work for the course STRENGTH OF MATERIAL (Course
code 22306) on topic entitled “TEMPREATURE STRESSES
AND ITS APPLICATION”. The micro project work is here by
accepted for the partial fulfilment towards completion of Diploma
in Mechanical Engineering, for the academic year 2022-23, from
Government Polytechnic, Ahmednagar. (MSBTE Institute Code

WHAT IS TEMREATURE
STRESSES
Stress is the force acting per unit area. The force can be of any
form. When the applied force is in the form of temperature the
resultant stress is called Thermal stress. It is observed when an
object expands or contracts due to a change in temperature.
Thus, we can define Thermal stress as:
“Stress caused due to the change in temperature”
6
Causes of Thermal Stress
According to the laws of Thermodynamics, Thermal Stress is a
mechanical process that occurs due to the change in the internal
temperature of an object. Under normal conditions, any rise in
temperature causes additional stress. However, sometimes in
addition to stress, thermal shock can also occur which causes
the sudden fracture or cracking of an object.

APPLICATION OF
TEMPREATURE STRESSES
1. The behaviour of gasoline on a hot day provides an
example of liquid thermal expansion in response to an
increase in temperature. If car tank is filled and it left to
sit on the sun, then gasoline expand in volume.

3. Train tracks are put in pieces and you can notice a
small gap between them. You can hear that gap in the
train's rhythm. The gap is to make it easy for the tracks
to expand and contract without putting undue stress on
each other.
