KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
In the merchandising or POD business, the „shotgun
approach“ is part of everyday life. And that makes
total sense. You try to cover as wide a range of people
and topics as possible, so that with a bit of luck you
might get a hit somewhere. Ideally, you then go deeper
into the niche and create a few more designs on the
topic.
Because let's be honest, in the end it only works by trial
and error. And even more so when you are dealing
mostly with niches that you don't really know anything
about and basically don't really understand the target
audience. If you follow this principle, you won't do
anything wrong initially. But you should be aware that
success can then only come from via sheer scale – the
amount of designs.
If you have ever been in a sales job before, you
probably know the English saying "It's a numbers
game". In other words, your success lies in the number
of attempts you make. If you test different approaches
and ideas long enough, you will inevitably end up with
a hit at some point. Fortunately, it’s actually easier than
that because the Internet makes it extremely easy to find
out what people are actually looking for.
But there is also a life after the „shotgun“. And I am a
huge advocate of the "drill-down" approach. If you drill
a lot of holes and you eventually hit oil. you don't just
move on to the next hole. Sure, you keep drilling in
different places so you can find the next well as soon as
possible. But the already discovered „oil“ has to be
sucked out now.
If you’ve invested a lot of time into research, then it is
very important to extract as much value from this „well“
as you can and in the most efficient way. Because all the
time you invested must pay off in the end.

And that is precisely why the drill-down approach leads
to a significantly higher hit rate in the long term. A niche
has been identified in which there are obviously people
who like to buy T-Shirts or other products. A necessary
requirement is met. The next step would therefore be to
focus intensively with this niche. To identify their interests,
to understand their worries and hopes, to understand
their slogans and last but not least to check which search
terms they primarily use.
Those who choose this approach will inevitably achieve
new sales with a significantly higher hit rate. You
develop a feeling for what works and can tackle the
niche from various different angles. I have been so
successful in certain niches because I have tried to
"dominate" them as much as possible. Of course, this is
not easy to do and of obviously many people try to do
the same. But the „shotgun“ faction usually can’t keep
up due to how their approach works.
I have decided to do a "deep dive" for specific niches in
each issue. The idea is to dig really deep into the topic
and the numbers, so that you are able to continue
independently afterwards. I use hard facts and statistics
to substantiate my claims and analysis. I am also a very
visual person. I work better with pictures and diagrams
than with text and I also believe that you can say more
with pictures than with words. My approach may seem
a bit scientific at times, but numbers simply don't lie.

A natural cycle for certain plants in which they
either don’t grow, or only grow a tiny amount.

A barbed hair-like spine that grows from
areoles on some cacti.
GRAFT
Where a shoot, twig, branch, etc is put into a
cut of a rooted plant. Moon cacti,
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, are often
grafted onto Dragon fruit, Hylocerus undatus.
GUTTATION
Water that is expelled out of the pores on a
plant. During the day plants transpire and pull
water up through the leaves, and at nighttime
when the humidity is higher and the plant’s cells
are full of water, guttation occurs to relieve the
pressure from the water in those cells.
HONEYDEW
The waste product from certain pests, which is
a clear sticky substance that ants love, and is a
good indicator that you have a pest living on
your plant. It can also be a perfect place for
sooty mold to grow.
HYGROMETER
A device used to measure the amount of
moisture in the air
INFLORESCENCE
On a flowering plant, it is the complete cluster
of flowers, including bracts, stems, and stalks.
JOINT
The area where two part of the plant come
together, like where the stem attaches to the
trunk.

KEIKI
An orchid that is produced asexually and is an
exact clone of the mother plant. This happens in
Phalaenopsis, Epidendrum, and Dendrobium
orchids, and the keiki can even bloom while still
attached.
KOKEDAMA
Japanese art of growing plants in a decorative
moss-covered ball of potting mix tied together
with string or fishing line.
LATEX
Milky white sap that comes from certain plants.
LEGGY
Another word for an etiolated plant; long,
skinny, pale new growth that is stretching
towards the light.
MACRONUTRIENTS
Nutrients that plants need in larger amounts.
Specifically N (nitrogen), P (phosphorous),
and K (potassium).
MICRONUTRIENTS

quotes are already relatively widespread. For
some of them I'm sure there are already shirts
available.
But this level of popularity is exactly what
makes these quotes interesting. Not all of them,
but many of them are specifically sought by
Amazon customers.
REMINDER FOR THE NEWBIES
HOW YOU CAN USE THIS DATA
What I've always had much success with in the past is
the combination of humor and silly quotes. Of course,
now you're thinking "Tell me something I don’t know!".
Of course everyone knows that funny quotes have
always worked well. But what many still overlook is the
fact that there is simply no better targeting than the
respective quotes themselves.
Let me explain with an example. If you are looking for
"fishing shirts", you are obviously looking for a shirt
about fishing. But that doesn’t mean that the person
necessarily wants to buy a shirt with our quote. But if the
customer is searching for "jerk it till it squirts t shirt", then
it’s safe to assume that know exactly what he wants. And
all it comes down to then is finding the best shirt at a fair
price.

You can easily check this with the help of
appropriate tools. And if there is search volume
for these quotes, then you can use my
"Bullseye Technique" to optimize your listings.
I go into more detail on this method in the box
below.
And this approach (I like to call it the "Bullseye
Technique") can be applied to just about any topic. You
pick a niche, then you search for quotes, and then you
check the Amazon search box to see if customers are
looking for that sentence (sometimes abbreviated). If so,
the search term appears and you can check the search
volume with a tool of your choice.
And the nice thing is that you already have the right
search term to optimize your listing. The great thing
about this technique is that the competition for this long
term keyword will be much less and the shirt will
definitely be relevant. So you increase your hit rate and
get the most out of each slot.

s always, on the following pages you
will find an overview of the current
event radar, which gives you an
overview of all relevant events for the next 5-6
months. Not every event is equally important or
equally lucrative. You will have to find out for
yourself what works best for you.
REMINDER FOR THE NEWBIES
HOW YOU CAN USE THIS DATA
Of course, we all know that events are
important in the merch business. And especially
for beginners who are stuck in the lower tiers of
Merch by Amazon, events can be a very good
opportunity to generate sales quickly and move
up to the next tier as soon as possible.
But let's face it. In most cases, we don't really
keep track of which events are coming up and
when. This is not least due to the fact that the
said events are not so strongly anchored in our
culture or are not common at all. It is therefore
all the more important to compile a calendar to
help you.
The event radar listed on the following page is
intended to serve exactly this purpose. It should
always cover the coming 3 months and show
various, relevant events and holidays from the 3
major markets. The biggest focus is of course on
the USA and Canada, because they simply
celebrate everything and all kinds of stuff and
need a matching shirt to go with it. But I don't
want to neglect the UK and Germany
unnecessarily either.

But in principle, it is always a good idea to
prepare for interesting events with enough
advance notice. This not only gives you enough
time to create numerous designs, but also gives
your listings enough time to "mature".
Personally, I have always followed the strategy
of uploading designs for a major event
(Halloween, Christmas, Oktoberfest) at least 6-
7 weeks before the event. On the one hand, so
that the shirts can "rank" properly, and on the
other hand, because purchases are made in
advance that help to land on the top ranks.
I handle it a little differently with the more
special events like "Pi Day" or "World UFO
Day". I firmly believe that the majority of people
who buy a shirt for these occasions don't
actually make the purchase until 1-2 weeks
beforehand.
And my experience has shown me that new
listings always get a little boost in the first 4-5
days initially. If you then consider the delivery
times, which are usually a bit longer in the US
than here, it makes sense to start uploading 2-3
weeks before.

All information I provide in this guide is based on my own research and the use of data
provided by third parties. I analyse this data and evaluate it according to my own
criteria. The evaluations are therefore inherently very subjective and do not necessarily
reflect your opinion or your own experience.

I provide this information so that you can draw your own conclusions. In this respect, I
naturally do not guarantee the successful implementation of the actions you take as a
