What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I can identify the National Anthem and explain what it is. I can create a digital storybook

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply

x Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

x Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

x Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

The lesson will start by sitting as a class. I will show the students my digital story book which
explains what the national anthem is to students and sings the words to them. Afterwards we
will talk about it as a class so that I can make sure everyone understands the content that
was presented to them. Once I’m confident that students understand what our national
anthem is, how it came to be, and can identify it I will review how to make a digital story
book with PowerPoint.

Students will be responsible for creating a story book reciting our national anthem. Students
can keep up with the requirements of this lesson via a guided handout small group teacher
support, where they will draw pictures to each stanza that will be uploaded for their digital
stories.

Because this lesson will be done in small groups it may take a week or more to conclude. The
lesson will end by giving students the option to present their work if they wish and posting
student work to our class blog for parents to view.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
Technology use will be managed by having the students draw out their story on a hardcopy
handout prior to working digitally. Students will have teacher / para-professional aid by small
group so that an adult can monitor and facilitate meaningful work by guiding students
through step by step. Students will also have a timer displayed on the board in class to have a
visual representation of on-task time.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL

This lesson supports UDL for diverse students in many ways. This lesson will have multiple
means of representation since the digital story book presented has visual and auditory
components and we will have a class discussion. The digital story book supports action and
expression by giving students a new way to express themselves and allowing for individual
choice in storytelling. Students are given autonomy in how creative they can get with this
assignment and the freedom of choice is not only engaging for students but also allows them
to express themselves and their understanding of content on a deeper level.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I believe this activity will positively impact student learning because not only is the student
learning the content, but they are learning digital literacy through this assignment and
gaining a new way to express themselves moving forward. I most look forward to teaching

the students how to create their storybooks, this will likely be the biggest learning curve for
kindergarten students. However, proficiency with productivity tools will be highly important
for students moving forward and be useful background knowledge in planning future lessons.
