OBJECTIVE:

Several properties are important in making calculations regarding

submerged materials. Measuring submerged materials properties, density, is
the object of this experiment, which is defined as its mass per unit volume (eqn.
1.1). It can obtain through various means, but in this course, we mention two methods
only.

Ρ ρ=m/V (Eqn. 1.1)

Where ρ is density kg/m3

m, mass kg
V, volume m3

Method 1;-
One method to determine the density of submerged materials is to weigh a
known volume and divide its mass by the volume (1.1).

M
Method 2;-
The last method for measuring density to be considered in this report
involves the use of a graduated cylinder. A graduated cylinder is an
instrument used to measure the volume of submerged materials that haven’t
uniform shape.

Vsub. = Vtot. - Vwater (Eqn. 1.2)

Procedure
Method tow:

1. Fill a graduated cylinder with an arbitrary amount of water.

2. Record the volume of water in the graduated cylinder (Vwater ).

3. Submerge the submerged materials into the graduated cylinder.

4. Record the new volume of water in the graduated cylinder and this
volume will be (Vtot. ).

5. Determine the difference in the volumes using Equation 1.2 and record
this volume. This value is the volume of the submerged material.
6. Divide the mass of the submerged material by the volume measured as
per Equation 1.1 and records this value. This will yield the density of the
submerged material.
