INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender people, queer, intersex, and asexuals (LGBTQIA+)

continue to experience widespread stigma, exclusion, and discrimination, particularly in

education, worldwide. Many LGBTQIA people experience significant violence, including brutal

beatings and sexual assaults, often premeditated.

Many schools in this generation of LGBTQ+ experienced discrimination about their

gender identity. They are being discriminated against because some people find it hard to accept

their choices and want to be in their life, especially in their family, relatives, and society. Because

of something that can be seen, a person is maltreated. This is what the law calls discrimination.

The main types of discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community that people talk about are

those based on sexual orientation and gender identity. However, other indicators like skin tone,

national origin, or talent can also cause discrimination against LGBTQ+ people.

The advantage of being a friend of LGBTQIA+ is, being open and honest with oneself can

boost one's self-esteem, ability to live a life of integrity, fostering relationships with friends and

family that are closer and more genuine, easing the burden of identity concealment, connecting

with other LGBTQ+ individuals, being a part of a community with other people with whom an

individual can share a commonality educating others and sharing one's own experiences to help

dispel stereotypes and myths, being a role model for others.

Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender people, Queers, Intersex, and Asexuals

(LGBTQIA+) face too much discrimination in our society, community, family, or worldwide,

especially in many different schools. Hence, LGBTQIA + is facing too much discrimination. It

involves discriminating against their gender, what they like, or what they do. There is too much

judgment about their gender, faces, voice, or even how they dress up like girls. When they put

makeup on their faces, they discriminate against it because they think it is inappropriate, but for

gays, it is okay because they want to do it. LGBTQIA+ is also a person who has a heart. They

feel pain when judged, but that judgment is to be a strong person to be a good person.

Back in the day, when LGBTQIA was not recognized, society discriminated against them.

They were subjected to a great deal of bullying and discrimination. In the past, being gay or

lesbian was the most common, but their fathers were not supportive because it was unusual to

have a son who did not act like a man. Especially in the Philippines, a religious country where

people believe in the biblical way that God only created man and woman in this world.

LGBTQIA people face discrimination, such as being asked to question their identity.

They were being mocked for their unusual behavior as a person. People ask them how a girl can

act like a boy, and a boy can act like a girl. They are also bullied, particularly at school. Students

who identify as LGBTQIA face a great deal of discrimination. Children are still so innocent that

anything unusual will be questioned, but this causes pain for students who identify as LGBTQIA.

LGBTQIA people are being praised for their creativity. They grow by demonstrating to

others that they, too, are capable. Recognize LGBTQIA as a free and outgoing person. LGBTQIA

students who have already recognized whom they tend to prove and fight for themselves.

They are being recognized as LGBTQIA, but some continue to face discrimination from

people who refuse to accept their existence. Other students frequently discriminate against

LGBTQIA students since some schools allow them to be themselves. We allow them to wear a

school uniform opposite their original sex at our school, which other students find strange.

Lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender people, queers, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+)

people have always had the right to fight for themselves if abused. Among the most common

struggles of LGBTQIA students at home is being abused by family members who cannot accept

their child's identity. Abuse is a common issue among LGBTQIA students at home. They would

instead remain silent to avoid burdening their family. Discrimination may also occur among

classmates. Students may be oblivious that they discriminate against others because they see their

actions as jokes.

Discrimination occurs everywhere and affects everyone. It tends to prejudice anyone

without knowing what they are. LGBTQIA people are among those who face discrimination

daily. People frequently ignore that they, too, are human beings with the right to live as we do.

B. Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand the problems and challenges experienced by LGBTQIA+

students in South Cotabato schools and explore possible solutions.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1. How are sexual orientation and gender identity determined?

2. How will the educators consider the safety of their LGBTQIA+ students in the school?

2.1 Would they consider the haircut and they and the uniform of their gender beliefs?

2.2 How will the schools intend to protect young LGBTQIA+ people from abuse and

discrimination?

2.3 What will the school offer to LGBTQ to promote gender equality and let students

recognize the differences between each gender?

3. Why is the word "that is so gay" so offensive if people do not mean anything by it?

4. Can LGBTQ+ people change their sexual orientation or gender identity?

5. How do certain aspects of your identity impact other aspects of your identity?

6. What feeling would they feel when they were humiliated and harassed?

7. When did they realize they were LGBTQ, and when did they begin telling others?

8. What will lawmakers and schools do to recognize bullying in schools?

C. Significance of the Study

This study aimed to examine the experiences of LGBTQ regarding inclusion during their

early school experiences to better equip educators and policymakers at all levels with information

to assist in providing safe and equitable learning environments for LGBTQ youth to succeed.

D. Scope and Limitations of the Study

The primary goal of this study will be to determine the positive and negative experiences

of LGBTQIA+ students in various schools throughout the province of South Cotabato to learn

about their feelings through discrimination.

We are conducting this research, acting and approaching them without manipulation, and

avoiding offensive words to avoid misunderstanding.

Many schools including in the province of South Cotabato, schools have reported that

some students who identify LGBTQIA+ have been discriminated against, which can cause

embarrassment.

As we observed, 60% of the students in various schools in South Cotabato are

LGBTQIA+ and face discrimination.

E. Definition of Terms

LGBTQIA+ - is an abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning,

intersex, asexual, and more. These terms describe a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.

A LESBIAN is typically a woman with a romantic and sexual preference toward other women.

Moreover, many non-binary individuals also identify with this label

GAY - utilized in particular cultural contexts to depict guys attracted to men in a romantic, erotic,

and emotional sense. This label should be used cautiously because not all males who engage in

same-gender sexual conduct identify as gay.

BISEXUAL - a person who is attracted to more than one gender in sexual, romantic, physical,

and spiritual ways, but not always simultaneously, in the same manner, or to the same extent

TRANSGENDER - the person is someone whose sense of self or gender does not match the sex

they were given at birth or does not fit gender stereotypes

QUEER is a multi-faceted word used differently and means different things and people.

1. Attraction to people of many genders.

2. Do not follow the rules of their culture about their gender or sexuality.

3. A general term for all people who are not straight. Nevertheless, some community members

may feel the word has been used against them because they like it.

QUESTIONING – An individual unsure of or exploring their gender identity or sexual

orientation.

INTERSEX – This is an umbrella term for people who are born with any of 30 other sex

differences, such as different chromosomes, sex hormones, gonads, or genitalia.

ASEXUAL – A person who does not find other people sexually attractive or is not interested in

sexual relationships or behavior. They may or may not feel physical, emotional, or romantic

attraction to each other. Asexuality is different from celibacy in that it is not a choice but a sexual

orientation. Asexual people can call themselves "ace."

DISCRIMINATION – involves treating different individuals differently. It is not always

unlawful – people are paid different wages depending on their status and skills. However, there

are specific reasons for which an employer cannot discriminate against anyone by law.

MANIPULATION – is the practice of exerting undue influence over others. People manipulating

others attack their mental and emotional sides to get what they want. The manipulator's

embarrassment is an emotional state characterized by mild to severe levels of discomfort. It is

typically felt when someone commits (or considers committing) a socially unacceptable or

frowned-upon act that is witnessed or revealed to others.

EMBARASSMENT – like shame and guilt- is a "self-conscious emotion" that can profoundly

negatively impact a person's thoughts or behavior. It seeks to create an imbalance of power and

exploit a victim to gain control, power, benefits, and privileges at the victim's expense.

DEPRESSION – this is a widespread and dangerous medical condition that harms how an

individual feels, thinks, and behaves. Thankfully, it is also curable. Sadness or a loss of interest in

previous hobbies are symptoms of depression. It can impair an individual's ability to perform at

work and home and cause several mental and physical issues.

PREJUDICE – is an emotional response to someone based on their perceived membership in a

group. A preconceived judgment or categorization of another person that is typically negative and

is based on that person's perceived political affiliation, sex, gender, gender identity, beliefs,

values, social class, age, disability, religion, sexuality, race, ethnicity, language, nationality,

culture, complexion, beauty, height, body weight, occupation, wealth, education, criminality,

sport – team allegiance, music preferences, or other personal characteristics.

DISTRESS – is an emotional, social, spiritual, or physical pain or suffering that may cause a

person to feel sad, afraid, depressed, anxious, or lonely.

ANXIETY – this is a normal stress reaction and can be beneficial in some situations. It can alert

us to dangers and help us prepare and pay attention.

PRECONCEIVED – to form a conception or opinion beforehand, as before seeing evidence or as

a result of previously held prejudice.

VIOLENCE – using physical force to injure, abuse, damage, or destroy.

INTIMIDATION – the act of intimidating or threatening someone to persuade them to do what

they want: every day, the campaign of violence and intimidation against them grows more

intense.

MOCKERY – a person or thing is mocked or insulted, sometimes simply by taunting, but more

frequently by creating a caricature that emphasizes negative traits while ostensibly engaging in

imitation.

HARASSMENT – Harassment encompasses a wide range of offensive behaviors. It is commonly

defined as behavior that demeans, humiliates, or embarrasses a person, and its irrationality

distinguishes it in terms of social and moral reasonableness. In a legal sense, these activities

appear unsettling, upsetting, or menacing.

WORKPLACES – the workplace is a location where someone works, for their employer or

themselves, a place of employment.

SCHOOL - a place where students can learn under the supervision of teachers.

HOMOSEXUAL – when two people of the same sex or gender engage in sexual activity, it is

considered homosexual.
