A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS

By: Khaled Hosseini

SUMMARY:
Khaleed Hosseini's novel A Thousand Splendid Suns tells the story of two Afghan
women, Mariam, and Laila, who face the Taliban's power and the challenges of life in
Afghanistan. Mariam, an illegitimate child, finds trust in her friendship with Laila, who
becomes Rasheed's second wife after her family is killed in a bombing. Over time, they
grow close, facing challenges like the Taliban and the loss of a loved one. Ultimately,
they fight for their survival and happiness.

REFERENCE:
Khaled Hosseini, an Afghan American writer, followed up his 2003 best-selling debut
The Kite Runner with the 2007 book A Thousand Splendid Suns. Following a family
tragedy, Mariam, a Herat-based illegitimate girl, is coerced into wedlock with a Kabul
shoemaker. Laila, who was born a generation later, has a pretty comfortable existence.
However, because of a similar tragedy, she is forced to accept Mariam's husband's
marriage proposal. As a result, their lives eventually cross.
