Welcome to this self-learning module on how to SUMMARIZE INFORMATION
FROM VARIOUS TEXT!

This module is intended to help you, learners, understand and master the
concepts of summarizing. It is designed to equip you with essential knowledge
about the said topic and skills in summarizing information from narrative text and
news clippings.

LESSON PROPER
Have you ever written a letter to someone? You must have enjoyed writing.
Here is a letter of Jerusha Abbott. Read a portion of this then do what is asked after
the selection.

Toward the end of

the Christmas vacation.
Exact date unknown.
Dear Daddy-Long-Legs,
Is it snowing where you are? All the world that I see from my tower is draped in
white and the flakes are coming down as big as pop-corn. It’s late afternoon—
the sun is just setting (a cold yellow color) behind some colder violet hills, and
I am up in my window seat using the last light to write to you.
Your five gold pieces were a surprise! I ’m not used to receiving Christmas
presents. You have already given me such lots of things—everything I have,
you know—that I don’t quite feel that I deserve extras. But I like them just
the same. Do you want to know what I bought with my money?

Answer the following questions below.

1. Who wrote the letter?

2. Who will receive the letter?
3. When did she write the letter?
4. What did she receive that made her write the letter?
5. Do you think she spent her money wisely? Why?

The selection that you read is an example of a narrative text. Notice how it is written.
Is it possible for you to make Jerusha’s letter brief? Find out in the next pages.

1
Study the summary of the letter below.

Summary

On a Snowy late afternoon, Jerusha Abbott writes Mr. Daddy-Long-Legs how she
has spent the five gold pieces as a surprise Christmas present from him. She thinks
she does not deserve any extras more than the things she receives. She lists down
the seven things she bought with the money: a silver watch, a book of Matthew
Arnold’s poems, yellow manuscript paper, a hot water bottle, a steamer rug, a
dictionary of synonyms, and a pair of stockings. She is hesitant to mention the last
item but she wants to be truthful to the daddy.

Now, try to analyze the content of the summary using the guide questions below.

1. How is the summary written?

2. Does it contain the main idea and the relevant details of the original text?
3. Was the idea from the original text complete?

You notice that the summary is brief. It has the main idea and relevant or important
details of the original text.

A summary is a brief statement or condensed version of what a selection, story,

book, or even news clips is about.

When you summarize, you restate the most important information of a text using
your own words.

Summarizing is:

• Keeping – keeping only the important information and main ideas

• Deleting – do not include supporting details in your summary
• Paraphrasing – use your own words

Summaries should be between 10 – 15 percent of the original text’s length.

Summarizing is a powerful tool to help you understand and remember what you
read.

Not only letters are summarized, but you can also do this in news clippings.
