HW Geometric Design of Highways, 2023-2024

Question (1a):
What do mean by this expression "safe and efficient Geometric Design of Highways must consider/ check
to the possibility of an existence of a combination state within the horizontal and vertical Alignments", then
list the steps of how to check and how to overcome of possible unsafe design final drawing outputs.

Question (1b): Analyze the following road profile to answer the following requirements:
1- Determine the horizontal and vertical drawing scales, 2- select the best construction line and the reasons
of that, 3- check the slope of the selected construction line, 4- build up a table of the levels of the
selected construction line and the natural ground levels, 5- calculate the cut and fill volumes.

1-Select the appropriate horizontal and vertical drawing scales, 2- Draw the ground levels line and the best
construction line and the reasons of that, 3- check the slope of the selected construction line, 4-calculate the cut
and fill volumes.
Question (2):
Use the following data to calculate the transition curve length ( you can assume any data are not given
and you need them in your answer:
The design speed (v)=75 km/hr, friction factor (f)= 0.13, horizontal curve radius ( R)= 135m road width (W)=
10 m, the site's terrain is hilly, the super elevation (e)= 0.067, rotation of the super elevation is about the edge,

Question (3):
Calculate the clearance distance (cd) on a horizontal curve from the inner lane to achieve the stopping sight distance if you have: the
curve radius (R)= 500m, the curve length = 300m, SSD= 25m, OSD=150m

Question (4):
Calculate the length of a vertical summit curve and its radius if you have got slope1 ( n 1)= +5%, slope2 (n2) = -2%, OSD=350m, the
condition is L>OSD, H=h= 1.3 m,

Question (5):

Calculate the sight distance (SSD) to avoid a crash between two opposed vehicles on a level
road, the running speed (v) of each vehicle =65 km/hr, perception and reaction time (t) = 2 sec,
friction factor (f) =0.15, and good breaking efficiency.

Question (6):
1- Calculate the length of a vertical summit curve and its radius if you have got slope1 ( n 1)= +4%, slope2
(n2) = -4%, OSD=350m, the condition is L>OSD, H=h= 1.35 m,

2- Calculate the length of a vertical sag curve and its radius if you have got slope1 ( n1) = -
5%, slope2 (n2) = +5%, OSD=350m, the design speed (v)= 65 km/hr,

Question (7):

1- From your study of the surface (level) and isolated intersections (grade), you have the choice to choose one of them,
is required to explain the steps of selection and considerations you will rely on them, types, then, use the drawings to
clarify the operation process of the intersection to achieve safety and steady traffic flow.

2- From your study of the surface and isolated intersections, if you have got the choice to choose the isolated one,
explain the reason and consideration you must rely on, types, then, use the drawings to clarify the operation process
the intersection to achieve safety, steady traffic flow and the efficient entrance and exit process.
3- Draw a sketch with a proper scale of a Grade (Isolated) intersection illustrating the geometric layout of this
intersection and the paths of the traffic flow with the proper dimensions, traffic signs and road markings.
4- Draw a sketch with a proper scale of an acceleration lane and another sketch of a deceleration lane illustrating
the geometric layout of each lane and the paths of the traffic flow with the proper dimensions, traffic signs and
road markings.
Question (8):
1. What do mean by this expression in the Geometric design of Highways process " Sight Distances" and how
can we design/recheck them,
2. Calculate the clearance distance (cd) on a horizontal curve from the inner lane to achieve the stopping sight
distance if you have: the curve radius (R)= 350m, the curve length = 450m, SSD= 35m.
