Chapter 3: Check, Call, Care 10:15- 11:30

Check, call, and Care is one of the most important parts of a first aider responsibilities. When
u encounter an injured person, you should repeat Check, Call, Care process until the condition
improves or EMS personnel arrive.

What happened? How it happened? Is scene safe? Are there any

ABC: Airway/ Breathing/ Circulation
Call: 911/ AED

A volunteer will be the victim, falling on the floor and we will demonstrate:
1. Checking the scene: What happened? How it happened? Is scene safe? Are there any
hazards? Fire/ Wire/ Gas/ Glass/ Drugs/ Thugs
2. Checking the person: LOC/ ABC
3. A:
a. Make sure the person has an open airway.
b. The person with crying, moaning, or crying….. Airway is open
c. The person Unresponsive….. Head tilt/Chin lift position
4. B:
a. Check for normal breathing for 5-10 sec
b. The person who can speak or cry is breathing
c. Chest movement normally…. Normal breathing
5. C:
a. Quickly look at the person from head to toe for signs of life-threatening
bleeding

TOP PRIORITY EMERGENCY CONDITIONS:


UNRESPONSIVENESS
DIFFICULTY BREATHING
LIFE THREATHENING BLEEDING

6. Call:
If a Top Priority Condition is available….. Call EMS: Use phone/ ask a bystander
If you are alone and no phone… Call loudly for help
If no one comes….. Get the phone quickly, call, and return to the person quickly
If the condition becomes deteriorated or Secondary assessment shows sth serious….
Call EMS
7. Care:
Care as needed and within the scope of your knowledge
Check, call, and care repeatedly
Monitor the person’s breathing, LOC, and overall condition
Help the person rest in a comfortable position
If necessary, role the person to recovery position
Keep the person warm
Reassure the person
8. Recovery Position
a. A person who is unresponsive or has an altered level of consciousness
b. Remember:
i. Support and protect the head
ii. Try to roll the person as one unit
iii. Role the Patient to a position where the body will stay safely
iv. Check ABC after the roll

We will divide students to groups of 3. One person will be the victim, one bystander, and
one first aider. They will practice following topics. The evaluation will be done via skill
sheet.

2. Secondary assessment: When u r confident that life threatening conditions are
addressed.
a. Ask SAMPLE questions: Signs and symptoms/ allergies/ medications/ Past
medical history/ Last oral intake/ Events leading to the emergency
b. Check the vital signs:
i. Level of Responsiveness: Alert/ sleepy/ confused
ii. Breathing: Fast or slow/ Shallow or deep/ Painful
iii. Skin: dry or wet/ Temperature/ Unusual color
c. Injury Check: Look for the injuries that were not identified during the primary
assessment.
i. Focused examination: If the person is responsive
1. Explain the purpose of the examination
2. Ask the person if anything hurts
3. Ask the person show the area of pain
4. Ask focused questions about how the person feel
ii. Hands-on check: If the person is breathing but unresponsive
1. Begin your check from head and then downward to chest,
abdomen, legs and then arms
Shock: A life threatening condition 10:55- 11:00

 Anxiety or confusion
 Coll, clammy, pale skin
 Weakness
 Excessive thirst
 Rapid breathing
 Drowsiness or loss of responsiveness
 Nausea and vomitus

Activity: 11:00-11:20
We will divide students to two groups. Use Scenario cards to evaluate their ability to
ask SAMPLE questions. One group will read the scenario, the other group will ask the
questions. The first group will reply.

Chapter 4: Chocking 11:30- 12:20
Definition:
Check: 11:30- 11:35

 Incomplete Chocking: If the person is able to cough or speak airway is not completely
blocked….. Encourage the person to cough and be prepared to provide care if coughing
stopped.
 Complete Chocking: If the persons airway is completely blocked, provide first aid

Call: Immediately begin providing care, then call

Heart Attack occurs when the heart cannot get enough oxygen because of a blockage in the
arteries which feed it.
Check:
Classic signs: Pressure, pain, tightness, or heaviness in the chest
A pain radiating from the chest to the arms, shoulders, back, jaw, and or neck
Shortness of breath
Nausea and vomitus
Cool, pale, sweaty skin
Dizziness
Unresponsiveness
Call:
EMS and get AED

Have the person chew ASA

Definition
Stroke occurs when the blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted.

A person of any age can have stroke
