THEORY:
Sinusoidal PWM
The primary function of a voltage source inverter (VSI) is to convert a fixed dc voltage to
a six-phase ac voltage with variable magnitude and frequency. A simplified circuit diagram
for a two-level voltage source inverter for high-power medium- voltage applications is shown
in Fig. 1. The inverter is composed of active switches (IGBT) with a free-wheeling diode in
parallel with each switch.
The principle of Three-phase sinusoidal PWM scheme for the two level inverter is
illustrated in Fig. 2, The fundamental frequency component in the inverter output voltage can
be controlled by amplitude modulation index
Where Vm and Vcr are the peak values of the modulating and carrier wave. The amplitude
modulation index ma is usually adjusted by varying Vm while keeping Vcr fixed. The
frequency modulation index is defined by
Where, fm and fcr are the frequencies of the modulating and carrier waves, respectively.

Fig 4 shows the simulink model of Unipolar and bipolar SPWM technique with
following specification.
Specification:
Figure 5(a) is sketched waveform of modulating and carrier wave of bipolar PWM,
Figure 5(b) is phase voltage Va, Figure 5(c) is Line voltage and Figure 5(d) is stator current Is
of phase a. Figure 6 shows the harmonic spectra for the SPWM two level inverter (a) phase
voltage and (b) Stator current for the condition rated above. Harmonic spectra of the phase
voltage reveals that the entire harmonic in phase voltage with the order lower than mf -2 are
eliminated and The harmonics are centred around mf and its multiples such as 2mf and 3mf.
