4. Who is the audience of this document?

Us filipino people.

5. List three (3) things in the document that are important:

For me the three things that are important in this document are unfair practices by the
hacienda owners, Increased rent, double charges, arbitrary land measurements, unfair taxes.
Suffering of the Calamba tenants, Decreased harvest, indebtedness, dispossession of property.
Lack of transparency and accountability, Unrecorded payments, suspicious land measurements,
pressure on tenants.
6. Why was this document written? Cite pieces of evidence in the document that support your

answer.

In my own opinion this document is written to expose the unjust practices of the
Dominican hacienda owners towards the tenants of Calamba also to appeal for reforms that
would protect the rights and improve the living conditions of the tenants. Lastly bring awareness
to the Spanish authorities about the situation in Calamba.

7. List two (2) things that tell you about life in the Philippines at the same time the document

was written.

Hmm I think its the widespread existence of big land properties and the arrangements
between landlords and tenants, where tenants are often treated unfairly and exploited by
powerful landowners.

8. Write a question to the author that is not answered by the document.

Hmm I don’t have idea, but I guess this question haved an answer “ Beyond the specific
abuses in Calamba, what do you believe are the underlying causes of the systemic problems
facing Filipino tenants under Spanish rule?” so that’s it.
